There are youth hostels of the European style in the US, but they are the exception vs the norm, and couchsurfing and airbnb are probably putting them out of business. That said - Chicago's loop location at State and Jackson is great, and I loved New York's Amsterdam and 103rd, and then Chelsea international hostel at about 23rd and 8th. The US has very cheap motels - motel 6 etc, so the European hostel vibe took off in a small number of large cities, and nowhere else. Airbnb has effectively made it worth it in the US. The above post about the presumed homeless shelter San Francisco is telling - someone thought the word hostel meant place for tourists to stay, where it actually meant shelter for recovering addicts. Do your research people.
