I predict it will be a flop. It's basically a big iPod Touch. Someone said that it won't have Java or Flash, so you won't be able to browse all websites. Someone said that the 10 hour battery life is if you set it on a table and leave, meaning that the screen will quickly blacken to save power. The 30 battery life is when it is off, I'm not impressed. I bet it will only have 2 or 3 hour battery life with the screen being used.

AT&T service will be $15 a month for 250 MB which is a tiny amount. or $30 unlimited, but those are for the ones with the 3G integrated network which cost $130 more. It's pretty big, people are not gonna walk around with it.

Apple is also really cheap with the memory. Why make something like that starting with only 16Gb memory. It's ridiculous..

It looks pretty, but I don't see the point? I'd rather carry around my small laptop.
It has Wi-Fi as well.

I said I want one, but second thoughts... It's looking like a giant size iphone. It'll have to do more imo.

I don't even think it has a camera.

It's an iBook plus iPod Touch. Just a way to open an iTunes type store for books.

It's a cute toy.

Can't run multiple Apps at the same time.

As Cracked.com successfully predicted, this appears to be the Godfather III of their products. the iPod and iPhone were massively popular and very well received. Now compare that to the lukewarm "meh" that seems to be preeting the iPad.

Well it certainly didn't help for it to be so secret and hyped to death before its announcement. This device is just one more step to paperless media. Imagine reading the New York Times on your ipod or iphone. I hated accessing any web page on my itouch because of the constant resizing and scrolling needed.
I just wish it would have ports for usb devices like external drives and keyboard and mouse.

If it is used for child porn is could be called the I Ped. I know that isn't really funny.

It doesn't, as far as I know.

Not even an iBook, because there is no comparable keyboard.
There is an onscreen keyboard, but I wonder how effective it is.

Well, the Macbook was considered quite an anticlimax when it came out, but it's reputation picked up pretty quickly.
Perhaps that will happen with the iPad.
(Don't see why it would, though.)

It's like the first iphone. Has potential but completely crippled. No camera. No flash. No multitasking. iPhone OS. This is apple's MO (although I will still only ever use apple products), they come out with something fresh, get you to buy it, then they save the things they SHOULD have put in the first version for later subsequent versions so you have to get another one.

Sounds familiar don't it?

I saw the 10 minute presentation online but can't find the link. They've created something they call layers and so many touch sensitive points that straight from the box it is very accurate to the touch. The onscreen keyboard was a good size and looked easy to use.

At another place I saw what the peripheral keyboard looks like.

Found it.

I'm with CCS Insight. They described the iPad as "a supersize iPod Touch that would get little interest if not from Apple".

IMHO Steve Jobs denunciation of netbooks in favor of the iPad sounded trite.

They are about to hold the press conference - super excited.
You are so darn cute when you are being geeky.

rolltop laptop? Wouldn't that be cool.
At first I thought it was meh, but after watching the whole video I would buy that. But I would want the 2nd generation of it. My concern is the screen life and possible screen shattering.

You're right though, the name could have been better. It sounds like a cyberage maxi-pad.

My excitement comes from the fact I read loads of comics and e-books, to be able to have a device which I can comfortably view them on just like a book is a godsend. No more sitting in bed at night with the laptop resting on my knees - I can hold this and use this just like a "real book". I personally have little interest in using it for much more than reading and web browsing. Just like I have never used my iPod for anything more than listening to music (a camera? really?)!

It's certainly not for everyone, but I can see a place for it in the market.

You may be right. But these things are actually amazing pieces of technology at a dirt cheap price. I once paid $900 for a 52mb hard drive and thought it was wonderful! I think we are all getting a bit jaded.

I wonder if Steve saw the finished product, was underwelmed, and said. "OK. we'll sell it cheap and that'll make up for the meh factor."?

At least it doesn't have wings. Run for the hills if they release the iTampon.

I'm just waiting for the model with a 12" screen so they can call it the iPad Maxi. :biggrin1:

But back on topic... it's a great debut and typical of their first generation of any new item. As SM stated, there are some glaring omissions to the device. The fact that there's no camera on the device is pretty shameful since even an iPod Nano can do video. Plus, to have a device like this and be limited to just iPhone/iPod Touch apps. You should be able to run a full OS on the models with more storage. As for Flash? That's not going to happen since people can now use Flash to make full-on web applications. That goes completely against the sales model for Apple and the App Store, which really does suck. Hopefully Adobe & Apple can work out their differences on this one. Perhaps making a Flash Lite for iPhone or something.

Despite all of this, I know I'm going to be in line for the 2nd generation models. I could convert my laptop to being just a machine for multimedia work on the go, and use the iPad for my e-mail/address book/simple stuff. Plus, Steve Jobs already announced that the models are going to be left "unlocked", which opens the doors to lots of possibilities for additional software hacks and other goodies.
