Wellington is the coolest city in NZ. I dated a police officer in NZ for a few years really really nice guy. Part Maori and a first responder who always checks up on me, the best sex I've ever hadThere was a very strange incident at the Wellington (NZ) gay sauna in 1980. At that stage gay men were being systematically harassed by the Police, generally Police recruits. You didn't need to be doing anything to be stopped and questioned. If you 'looked' gay, that was enough. Anyway I drove into Wellington to hand deliver a letter to the morning newspaper. Completely innocent. And then went to the sauna. At the reception someone remarked that did I know the Police were running towards you on the street and calling out to you and stopped when you went in. Then the young man on reception said we have Police at the sauna. How you you know that. We suspected that some customers were Police and went through their personal items. At that time all personal items, money IDs etc were left at reception. And how often: regularly.
4 cops maybe 5, one was a detective whom popped my cherry. There was no uniform sex invloved tho.

There have been two reforms, one decriminalising consenting sex, and the other allowing same sex marriage, more recently. Both were fought bitterly by conservative groups. The LGBT+ community are generally accepted socially today in a way that just was not possible before 1987.How are gays viewed in NZ?
