No way, man. I’m not going to send my DNA out to who knows what.

Friends have done it and haven’t really found anything remarkable. It has resulted in some face to face visits with distant heretofore unknown relatives.

So the DNA results calculated to 100%, yet only go back to European descent? Wondering how this is possible when scientific estimations and proof show DNA of all humans go back to out of Africa migration.

Interesting.

My Brother had a DNA Ancestry.com test done. Basically told him what he wanted to know.

How accurate do you think they are? What I do know though, is now they have his DNA on record for all commercial companies whom have an interest to buy.

Nearly 20% English/Irish. I was expecting less than half that. Nearly 2% Asian, most of that being in and near the Philippines. The rest being sub-Saharan African, mostly Nigerian, specifically Yoruba. When my brother finally submits his, I will know more about the migration history of my father's DNA.

There was a program on tv a couple months ago, regarding this. The program was Marketplace and was shown on the CBC here in Canada. You can probably find it on YouTube. The reporter and her identical twin sister sent dna samples to a few of these testing facilities. If memory serves, I think more than one facility had totally different results for each of them. I don't believe any facility sent back results that showed each sister had identical ancestry results.

I had the same concerns about security and privacy as many have shared. But a cousin nagged me, and I did it anyway.

I’m glad I did. I’ve connected with distant relatives who are a pleasure to know. I helped one adopted woman solve the riddle of her biological parents.

Genetic traits? It appears that we all can write passably. We have lungs like bellows and voices like foghorns. My mother’s family likes to hold grudges, and it appears that’s genetic. By meeting many relatives, I was able to trace my ADHD.

As I shared in a other forum here, the most important discovery is a genetic susceptibility to muscular degeneration from taking statins. It explained how three elderly but robust uncles declined fast after they were prescribed a statin following a minor cardiac wobble. I’m getting Keine Statine/No Statins tattooed on my sternum.

As far as accuracy goes, I can compare two results. Family Tree DNA proved very reliable and detailed. 23&Me returned the same results but not as detailed. The latter, being more popular, was was more useful in tracing relatives.

With the extra info from FTDNA, I was really able to piece together my father’s family story. It’s a doozy.

It isn't as accurate as a lot of people hope it will be. One thing you should be concerned about is your DNA information is given to data bases that use it in solving crimes.
Why? If my cousins are fucking up, carry their asses to jail. Simple.

Police can only use public databases, not private ones like 23 and Me or Ancestry.com.

I’m glad I did it. There were a couple of surprises, but the best thing was finding cousins who had been adopted back in the 60’s. We’ve now all gotten quite close, brought our family closer and healed a lot of old wounds. I have new nieces, new family. It’s been amazing. There was sadness, but more good than sad.

About my ancestry, a couple of surprises - 1% middle Eastern (where the hell did that come from) and 10% Irish and not Scottish. Wtf?! Someone snuck in with the Scots!

I watched multiple videos of cold cases being solved by them taking DNA, and entering it into the privates ones like you mentioned. They were able to find relatives, and back track from there.

Well, sort of. They need a court order to match specific DNA from private ancestry agencies and it’s less likely to be successful. Using a public database means they can use a more general method and work backwards. That’s how they found the Golden State Killer and many others. Adoptees often hire people to use that familial method as well.
