Anyone Here Have A Child In College

Bottom line, she's escaped me (mostly) and is in her second semester (freshman) at VCU in Richmond, VA.

I have given her my used car and bought a new one (perhaps I am too generous). But she needs that to get to work instead of 30 min on bus.

Also I am paying the insurance on both cars, I feel she should help (am I an ass?)

Sorry, don't know these things.

I have one who graduated and one in college now.

I pay the cars’ insurance. There’s something to be said about having the kids work hard to support themselves and learn the value of hard work, etc. but I’ve never met anyone who was better off having learned those lessons than someone who had help along the way.

If they’re going to work hard, they’re going to work hard whether you help or not.

If you can afford it, take that stress out of their lives.

If she is in school, cover the insurance. Once she’s graduated and working, show her how to find the best coverage and rates.

as for the cars, she has TWO? Or you gave her the one you would have traded in or sold?
She only needs a car. And honestly, 30 min on the bus is a good commute.

I’m in the camp of helping wherever you can. College/university is hard. Working while you go increases the pressure on the student. I have a student in university. While I expect some help, financially I carry a lot of the pressure.

Yes so I've given her the car and bought a new one for myself, not a fancy one for myself, Toyota RAV4. I think I can cover her while she's in school. After that, I think yes she is on her own to create a policy. I have done my best to help her establish credit under my credit cards as an auth user, etc., pay college tuition, etc.

I have taken the good advice of the above ^^^ and am funding this car insurance through her graduation.

30 min on bus wouldn't be bad if we weren't living what we're living now. You know?

She's getting 2011 Hyundai Sonata with replaced engine at 100000 miles.
