I was wondering if anyone here might know anything about organized crime operations in Shenzen.
A friend of mine's father was just murdered over there. He apparently had gotten a loan from some people who turned out to be loan sharks. He knew his life was in danger and called the US Embassy a number of times and they told him they couldn't help him unless he could find his way to Hong Kong. He called them later and said he was being followed and that he feared for his life because some of his neighbors were telling the loan sharks when he was home. The embassy told him to call a hospital and so he did. The ambulance came and took him to the hospital where he was admitted. He then left with a strange woman who did not identify herself to anyone and, just like in the movies, walked out of there with him.
The next thing that happened were neighbors reporting a body on a lower balcony of their building. He had fallen at least 15 stories to his death and his apartment, which was on a higher floor above, was locked from the inside so the police declared it a suicide and refused further investigation. This form of murder isn't unusual in Shenzen and seems to be the norm as a good number of westerners have, "committed suicide," this way. The Chinese government is also making return of the body to the USA rather difficult. There are all kinds of fees and permits needed and they keep urging my friend's family to have the body cremated instead as all the fees and permits will be waived. The government also refuses to conduct an autopsy and will not release the body to a private doctor to conduct one.
My friend's family have contacted their Senator, Governor, and Congressmen and all of them are disturbed by this news. All of them have claimed that what the family is facing is not unusual. Westerners generally get very little protection from the Chinese government and the embassy has protested, yet nothing is ever done to even look for the people who conduct these murders. They stop a hair short of saying that the Shenzen police are on organized crime payrolls, but that's the jist of the conversation.
Is this sort of thing common in Shenzen? Are these just street gamgs or highly organized triads? My friend's family is very concerned about other Americans who might be in the same position but also worry the triads might try to come after the family here in the US if they make too big a deal of trying to find whodunnit. From what I understand, my friend's father didn't know the people he got the loan from were shady but perhaps that was a miscommunication. He spoke Mandarin farily well and he seems to have been introduced to them in a friend of a friend sort of way.
All in all, it just sucks. I and my friend's family are alarmed by how often things like this seem to happen to westerners in China if the officials they spoke to are to be believed.
