...but it has been covered up for 60 years

Aliens have contacted humans several times but governments have hidden the truth for 60 years, the sixth man to walk on the moon has claimed.

Apollo 14 astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, said he was aware of many UFO visits to Earth during his career with NASA but each one was covered up.
Dr Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview that sources at the space agency who had had contact with aliens described the beings as 'little people who look strange to us.'

He said supposedly real-life ET's were similar to the traditional image of a small frame, large eyes and head.

Chillingly, he claimed our technology is 'not nearly as sophisticated' as theirs and "had they been hostile", he warned 'we would be been gone by now'.

Dr Mitchell, along with with Apollo 14 commander Alan Shepard, holds the record for the longest ever moon walk, at nine hours and 17 minutes following their 1971 mission.

'I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet and the UFO phenomena is real,' Dr Mitchell said.

'It's been well covered up by all our governments for the last 60 years or so, but slowly it's leaked out and some of us have been privileged to have been briefed on some of it.

'I've been in military and intelligence circles, who know that beneath the surface of what has been public knowledge, yes - we have been visited. Reading the papers recently, it's been happening quite a bit.'

Dr Mitchell, who has a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering and a Doctor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics claimed Roswell was real and similar alien visits continue to be investigated.

He told the astonished Kerrang! radio host Nick Margerrison: "This is really starting to open up. I think we're headed for real disclosure and some serious organisations are moving in that direction.'

Mr Margerrison said: 'I thought I'd stumbled on some sort of astronaut humour but he was absolutely serious that aliens are definitely out there and there's no debating it.'

Officials from NASA, however, were quick to play the comments down.

In a statement, a spokesman said: "NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe.

'Dr Mitchell is a great American, but we do not share his opinions on this issue.'

The spokesman said NASA doesn't track UFOs... but Mitchell never said that they did. Just that they kept each visit quiet.
Still, not sure which side to believe. I mean, I'm sure at some point in the history of this planet, foreign life forms have come here or atleast nearby. Whether there's been landings in recent history though, I'd have to see some irrefutable evidence to be sure.

A lot of these kind of stories seem to be emerging recently. It's been suggested that they're just part of a promotional campaign to generate interest in the new X Files movie but the truth is being covered up.

I do think NASA like to skirt around questions by offering non-answers - a bit like Ministers! Even if we were to believe that NASA is not tracking UFOs, someone is. There is no way a UFO is going to get into the Earth's atmosphere without space agencies the world over knowing about it and having contingencies in place to deal with it. On whether we are alone, I don't think we are. Even assessing the likelihood on a balance of probabilities, I don't see how we can be. Given the size of the universe/galaxy/solar system if we are here, there MUST be more intelligent life out there. It would not surprise me in the least if we were under constant surveillance by a number of other lifeforms.

Are you kidding??? If there were alien life out there, and it turned out they were friendly (and they may well be), this opens up all sorts of possibilities for learning, space travel and population of other planets - something which may need to become a reality in our children's lifetimes. Besides, don't you think it is exciting to contemplate the existence of other beings? I do.

no

major philosophical issue here for me is the anticipation that other life forms will have structured consciousness similar to our own

I find this deeply problematic, given the nature of human consciousness

I'll let it go at that, since it would take volumes to explain

I don't know that anyone is anticipating that. That said, the fact that these lifeforms are potentially out there in space, exploring terrain in a far more meaningful way than we have been able to might be taken as a reasonable indicator of the depth of their consciousness.
Whether it is similar to our own is, of course, debatable.

They had to tell the Apollo astronauts about it because the astronauts themselves saw UFOs while en route to the moon. A UFO even flew underneath a lunar lander as it was in descent to the lunar surface. Astronauts, at least of that period, were trained to be practical experts at everything they might have to do. They were also chosen for their extraordinary rationality. If an astronaut believes he's seeing UFOs in space, then that astronaut is going to question it. If there is no practical answer for it, then that astronaut isn't going to fly anything because he would doubt his sanity. In those years, the entire nation was trusting these guys with the most sophisticated technology we had, and letting them control it. It would have been essential to brief astronauts on what they might encounter. That would include aliens and UFOs.

If astronauts, men who have had every battery of psychological tests ever developed, are reporting UFOs when they are the only humans in space, then something isn't what we expect. The only other nation with the technology to put humans in space at the time of the Apollo missions was the USSR and there is no record of them launching any manned or robotic missions to shadow the Apollo missions.

This whole business of cover-up is ridiculous at this point in time, yet I understand the risks of acknowledgment. Politics would be stood on its head, whole political parties focused on alien defense could spring-up overnight, people could panic, demand the government attack them. I'm sure other people would want to know why the aliens are not curing cancer, preventing disasters, or giving us limitless energy. If they're so benevolent then why haven't they done these things? Surely they could. Religious leaders might react any number of ways, and new alien-based religions might appear. Businesses and governments around the world would look to exploit any type of alien connection. In short, things will be chaotic for a while until most people become convinced these beings are peaceful. Having the president or the pope or Hawking saying they're peaceful won't make anyone believe they are.

Disclosure must happen, but it has to happen carefully and with an enormous information campaign to assuage the fears of people. Even then, it's still quite a risk.

Or they could just have longer-standing civilizations and thus greater developments in technology. The timeline of our technological advancements is just one of many possibilities. They could have skipped right past fossil fuels and moved on to something cleaner and more efficient.
Also, the cultures they've established will play a significant role in determining their nature, regardless of similarities between the structure of their consciousness and our own. Heck, just compare Ancient Greece to Modern Day China, for one of several examples. Different cultures and thus vastly different behaviors, principles and natures in the same species.
In other words, just because their minds are built like ours doesn't mean they'll behave like us.

Which brings about other issues regarding ethics.

What if it was normal for the aliens to mate with their children? Perhaps they are asexual? Perhaps they are multisexual? Maybe they kill their weak and infirm? What if they are cannibalistic? Have a caste system? Commit ritual suicide at a certain age? Own slaves? There could be many things very shocking to us that could cause us to immediately dislike and distrust them. What if they have no religion? Evangelicals of all religions would storm their governments begging them to send the aliens missionaries and scriptures.

So many things to consider.

All we need to go it get a hold of a Stargate and travel to the galaxy where Thor and his little buddies live and they will protect us. Damn where did I put my Zero point module.

Shit I hope being asexual isn't contagious, I'd have so many brats running around here It would look more like an ant colony.

Nice, dude. This brings up the point that even if they were to inform us about cures, new medicines, free energy and such, a certain few very important economies could potentially collapse unless worldwide policies can be agreed upon, which is probably another huge argument against dislcosure.

But the thing is, what person or agency would disclose this so that everyone would believe? Not the president, he isn't allowed to know anything about this, I doubt the CIA would say anything, and even if they did, people wouldn't take them seriously. The sad part is, even if there was disclosure from governments around the world, there would still be people thinking it was a hoax. I'd like to know what's going on too, but maybe the waiting game isn't so bad? I mean, if there really are aliens and they really are visiting us, and they really do want us to know about them, I'm sure, if they really wanted us to know, that they would eventually make it blatantly obvious to everyone, so that it is impossible to hide. Maybe that's what's starting to happen now...

Why? Because governments always have your best interests at heart? I suggest that being skeptical of any government action is in the best interest of population. Too often bad things happen when people aren't.

Let me get this straight: Beings with the technological smarts to travel from one planetary system to another (how long would that take with our technology -- tens of thousands of years? hundreds of thousands?) have come all the way over here and have been trying to make contact with us, but the evil government people have been conspiring to hush the whole thing up, and have been so cunningly effective that they have concealed all decisive evidence. Have I got the story right?

actually, even if they live on the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy lets say more like 50 million years if speed of light travel exists. Hubble has found galaxies that are over 110 million lights years across.

Light takes 8 minutes to get here from the sun which I think it 93 million miles away.
