This was an honest question, there was no prejudizm :)wink:) intended. The replies have answered the question. Middle and upper middle class people are self obsessed the world over and the US has many and they are portrayed as such throughout the world by your media.

Are Americans more self-obsessed than other people? Not to generalise of course  If so, why?

No, we are not. How could you even ask that question? Have you not met any French people?

Actually, we are not different than any other nation. If anything, from the amount of threads about the US, I would say others are self-obsessed about us. I was thinking the same thing! Nobody seems to give a rats ass about the value of a dollar, the price of gasoline, the quality of the public schools, or racism that goes on in Austrailia, Norway, or Germany.

*SNIP*

I love being an American. I wouldn't choose a single other country to be from. Ever. I still respect other cultures, and I enjoy visiting other places, but there is no place like our country. If anything, we can't seem to keep others OUT! There is something to be said for a place that people will risk their lives to get to.
I most definetely agree.

That's very funny. I was wondering whether they were the exception, before you posted.

To be fair, a lot of posts about the US are simply because you are the majority on the site, and yes, it is difficult to escape your entertainment media and CNN.

Although this thread started with the question of self obsession, It seems to be migrating toward the idea of generalizations, which I think is more to the point.

Here is my perspective as a Puerto Rican American who has just moved back to Puerto Rico:

Here in Puerto Rico I have noticed that generalizations abound! Every time I express confusion over cultural or linguist differences, the invariable response is:

“Well, Americans see it differently, they blah blah blah …”

I’ve heard this so much I wanna’ pull out my hair! And I was born here in Puerto Rico!

America is geographically and demographically too large to make any generalizations that apply. There can be as much difference between a Californian and a New Yorker as there is between a Thai and a Lapp. So to make any sort of generalization that we are self obsessed, or anything else for that matter, is just nonsense. Yes, we have a HUGE media machine here that gets broadcast over the globe so it may appear that the American voice is loud, but we are just people like everyone else.
