according to published stats 3% of men worldwide have a penis measuring 7¾ to 8¾ inches long.
I fall in that category so I take it to mean that if you were in a room with 100 men only 3 would have that size but every person I have talked to man or woman except one has all had bigger at least 9 inches..
so maybe the stats are wrong idk.

well I chat on here al the time and the people all say the biggest I've had was 10 11 or more. and I've only been with 4 women and all but one have all had at least nine. I my wife was a virgin so she is the only person I've heard of that hasn't been with bigger so It doesn't seem to be as rare as the say

What they say is not necessarily truth. And again, why are you asking these people this question? Does it matter?

Not only do people lie but they also go by mental judgements on size and not actual measurements. :p After all those locker room threads "this guy must have been 8 inches soft!!!11one"... uh-huh, sure.

Sure. Maybe you should be thankfull you fit into the 3% catagory. What site did you get this statistic from, cuz that number seems awfully low.
The only study that publicly shows the standard deviations is: http://www.free-condom-stuff.com/education/research.htm
I dunno the legitimacy of the survey but it is linked to on wikipedia at least...

Anyway, it says the average penis length is 5.877" with an SD of .825". 2SD puts it at 7.527". 2SD means that only ~4.5% are that size or bigger. 3SD is 8.352" and only 1% are that big or bigger.

I would say they are right, on one thread here at LPSG it was hard to find anyone with 8, they are far and few. Just depends on who is measuring.. officially no man measures cock the same way.
I gave my wife a piece of paper 4.5 inches and asked her how long she thought it was and she said 6 inches.
So if asked size, they don't know what size it is, they tell you what you want to hear.

My considerable anecdotal experience is consistent with the literature on the topic.

Completly wrong. Your numbers are way too high.

2SD = 2.2750% ( or about 1 in 44 )
3SD = 0.1349% ( or about 1 in 741 )

I haven't done polls and don't plan to, but in general I would say the published "averages" you've seen are a lot closer to the truth than claims of random people. "Internet inches" are not real life.

Don't the statistics only work if it's a normal distribution under a bell curve? Couldn't it be that penis size isn't distributed normally?

That's true if you're just trying to find the percentile people fall into. Around the median it's pretty accurate. ie they're not useful for comparing the outliers. The error dirkejse keeps making is to assume you can calculate, with useful accuracy, a variation in size of a body part at the +/- 3SD level.

To get an accurate view at the extremes, you need a study with a much larger sample size. The LifeStyles sample (which was measured by a 3rd-party) shows anyone 7"+ is in the solidly 'long' range: Mr. Average - The true story about penis size, from a site that isn't trying to sell you anything.
Though their sample size was only ~300 I think (you can double check). Ponchietti et al did the best large-scale study that I know of, with 3,300 conscripts (as random a sample as you could find) measured. They measured stretched-length without pressing, so it's likely their measurements are a good 1.5cm below where they would be, but it still gives a good idea of the percentiles. The nomogram is shown here:
Friday Weird Science: For Men, It Really IS The Size That Counts | Neurotic Physiology

They put the 99th percentile at 17.5cm

It's true that people lie. It's also true that this site is a magnet for both larger sizes and those who prefer larger sizes. So the sampling here will be skewed.
