It amazes me how my friends who are black call each other and me the "N" word all the time, it confusing at times,
It's unacceptable. As I said in my previous post, you need a better class of friends. These often uneducated ghetto blacks have been brainwashed to believe they can take back the word and own it. Make it pretty or a term of endearment. Sorry, it can't be done. NIGGER is an ugly hateful, evil word. :angryfire2: It is drenched in centuries of hate, beatings, murder, rape, etc. There is no way I want to own that; and those blacks that do are NOT the sort with whom I desire to associate.
OH Bollocks nj, what evidence do you have for a comment like that?
Ask Hickboy. Or some of the other white Americans born and bred in the south eastern United States.

And what pray, does spoken like a white man mean?, is that different from anyone else?

I know you think you are being funny, but you aren't. :irked: Spoken like a white man, means spoken like somebody who has never been discriminated against because of the color of their skin or because their name is different from the accepted norm. You know that and your insolence is not amusing. :angryfire2:

Now be careful that you are not being racist with throw away comments like that, would it have been acceptable for me to say "spoken like a Black man"?
No, but that's because "Spoken like a black man makes no sense." :duh: There is no frame of reference for such a statement. You could accurately say, "the customer service agent on the phone sounded like a black man." Then everybody would know he spoke ebonics or with some sort of ghetto accent/dialect.

We are all working to the same humane respectable attitudes aren't we?
Yes, we are but the OP didn't ask about that. I merely answered his questions.

Nothing. But it does have a lot to do with Relationships,Discrimination and Jealousy which is the topic of this forum.

I haven't heard any of those things in this thread.

Discrimination........ is to discern one person or group from another.
jealousy.....is just that, being envious or jealous.
relationships ........are people that have a conection.

none of those things have anything to do with being racist.

maybe this topic should be under etc, etc, etc.

Yes and here in the States a lot of blacks are among the most vocal opponents of gay marriage.
That's because of the Baptist and Pentecostal churches, to which a majority of the church going blacks attend. It's not black Americans that are homophobic, so much as certain, religious, black Americans.

True. I know Jamaicans and Haitians who do not want to be called African-Americans. If you are referring to them, they want to be called Jamaicans or Haitians. If you are referring to the larger group they belong to, the prefer to be called blacks.

I think people should be allowed to name themselves whatever they want.

excellent point!

and it is deemed acceptable for a black man to be racist because of our nations past? I find it sad that some black people are even brought up by their parents still believing this. perhaps it's just the media playing tricks on me? I have hung out with black people before many times and i get that blame-it-on-the-honkey mentality.

now I understand this is not a 100% stereotype glove-fit. there are exceptions obviously. but has the word racist morphed into a word designed for white people who are intolerant of other cultures? If you do not understand what I'm saying, basically how most words start out non-pejorative and turn pejorative such as gay, bitch, fag, etc.

Please respond with your opinion no matter what your race is!

And please don't even TRY to give me shit about not using the term african-american. you'll just be proving my point furthermore.

Dooky mate, you are a boobhead.

Tardis69, you may want to read one of my recent blogs. To the best of my knowledge I have never been hired to fulfill a quota. I don't doubt that it has happened to others in the past, but unqualified white people have been getting great paying jobs for years. Maybe turn about is fair play.

You may want to check this website once a month for proof that prejudice and racism are alive and thriving in America today.

Ugh. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Black people are just as racist as white people. No more, no less. You can try to prove to me otherwise with any manner of non empirical personal observation, and I will counter that for every extreme you find on one side of the racial spectrum there is an equal extreme on the other. It's really simple logic.

To paraphrase Teddy Pendergrass's "Love TKO"

"So, I guess y'all better let it go...
looks like another RACE TKO"

We are all going to see this topic through the lense of our own experiences. There is always someone who will find an exception to the rule. There really is no true way of answering that question since we can not poll (nor have them answer truthfully) every black or white person on the planet. That being said, let's lay it down calm and easy.

The term African-American is a nationality, it has nothing to do with race. Even a white person can be African-American. I met a white women who was born in South Africa, but is now an American citizen. She is African-American ....
In a sense, 'African-American' could be taken to refer to anyone of American citizenship whose forebears came from Africa or who came from Africa him/herself.
(In an anthropological sense, that might mean every single American, but I digress...)
But 'African American' is a term used to substitute for the old term 'colored' and, to a much lesser degree, the term 'black.'
Mainly, they're people whose forebears were brought over as part of the slave trade.
So, while a white South African who had taken up American citizenship might logically be referred to as an African-American ... I'm not sure they really fall under that rubric.

These would be the people we now call black and used to call colored.

C,

The term is confusing at best. It obliterates any other ethnicities and nationalities which might lie within. I may answer to it on one day and on another I am just an AMERICAN plain and simple.
