I ask this to those who have identified themselves as Republicans for at least 10 years, but anyone is welcome to comment. Are they really Republicans? Do they really represent your political values? Are the extreme measures being taken something you would have supported 10 years ago?

Again, anyone can give their 2 cents. I am just directing this at those who were Republicans before this TEA party flare up. Take a hard look at what has become of the Republican party over the past 6 years and ask yourself if these TEA party people are really one of you or did the Republicans, for fear of losing their jobs, just hi-jack them and use their hatred of liberals to get elected in 2010 and 2012.

I don't think they are. I mean, they are calling people like Charles Krauthammer and Peter King and Tom Coburn R.I.N.O.'s now. Tom Coburn has the single most conservative record in recent congressional history and somehow he is no longer a Republican anymore??? Help me here...

There is no doubt they are real. There are elections are not in dispute. It's sad to admit, but the American people put them in office by the democratic process.

Sometimes, the assholes win small battles. And hopefully not, sad to say, the war. it has become more of rhetoric in which some people will suffer.

Tea Party people are pre-dominantly comprised of Republicans that are disaffected with the political process. Whether they are Republicans or not Republicans is a pointless discussion, but it is noteworthy to understand the differences between them and the GOP establishment. They rose to power by not running against the establishment candidate (Cruz, Paul, countless races in the House as examples) and are not keen on the business as usual approach that has led to the $17 trillion debt and 4 straight years of trillion dollar deficits.

It's obviously extremely difficult to win any election in this country as a 3rd party candidate, so as much as the Tea Party would probably love to branch off from the Republican brand name, the two are stuck with each other for the time being.

Tea Partiers come in two kinds.

The Idiots, imbeciles, racists, and fools who have literally Zero understanding of the world around them, live in perpetual fear, and are easily manipulated by fear mongering. ( the majority )

And The ruthless, manipulative, self absorbed assholes who are more than willing to manipulate the morons to line their own pockets and parley political power into cushy jobs.

Of the two... the later are easier to deal with, because if you can make it in their self interest, they will bargain.

The former... the true believers, are the most dangerous. Because they are unreasoning and therefore unreasonable.
These doofi... when elected to office, are the kind of imbeciles who are eager to "experiment" with ideological idiocy... such as Defaulting on the Debt... or Shutting Down government... to prove that Government isn't even necessary.

They are worse than anarchists.

The GOP SHOULD be squeezing these people out... but, due to their reliance on incendiary race baiting and disinformation tactics over the past 25 years to coalesce White Fear into political power.... and the effectiveness of Rush and FOX and other fear mongering propaganda efforts... the only conservative base they even have left is predominantly stupid, small minded, fearful, and racist.

They painted themselves into a corner where the the GOP power elite live in fear of the very extremists that they purposely created with their "Southern Strategy", and their appeals to the uninformed.

This is what the Whig Party started to look like in the years before it utterly dissolved.

All elected candidate should work for free. No income and No Benefits and No Retirement. Then see who loves their country and wants to make it a better place for all.

Agreed!
Why is it the uninformed seem to have such a large following? Is it simply because it is so easy to be uninformed (laziness), or are they just the victims of our dumbed-down education system?
Probably both!
But, we know which party is in favor of privatizing the education system, promoting corporate-owned "magnet schools" that suck up our tax dollars and produce SHIT!

I would tend to agree with Phil on this issue. Tea Party Members tend to be radical extremists who are unable to understand that there is such a thing as checks and balances. The other thing that appears to be a hallmark is the very childish manner in which these extremists conduct business. It is not unlike the child who if he cannot win the game takes the ball and holds the other kids hostage so that they are unable to play as well. While some feel that the GOP will survive this and it is possible they are going to experience damage to their party that could cause a major party shift away from their ideology. Historically idiots like Limbaugh, Beck and if one is old enough Wally George have been around a long time, but those in the Tea Party are in danger of exposing the whole thing to where the loss to the GOP will be more than they ever dreamed possible.

Right now, the GOP is the best supporter that most Democratic candidates could ever have. Do it enough and people though slowly are going to wake up and when voting time comes they are going to retaliate.

I am waiting for the political cartoon that shows numerous famous GOP members in the "Unemployment Line" based on whom they have chosen as their allies.

Saw a PPP poll and was suprised that the results did not suprise me.

62% of republicans think Obama is secretly trying to take away their guns
44% of republicans think Obama is secretly trying to find a way to stay in office after 2017
42% of republicans think Muslims are covertly implementing Sharia Law in American court systems
27% of republicans think a group of world bankers are slowly eliminating paper currency to force most banking online – only to cut the power grid so regular citizens can’t access money and are forced into worldwide slavery

Democrats have our own crazies, but nothing like this. When I was growing up I don't remember republicans being insane. I blame the TEA party.

^ what's happened is the rise of Stephen Colbert's 'truthiness' which now trumps all else.

Truthiness is a quality characterizing a "truth" that a person making an argument or assertion claims to know intuitively "from the gut" or because it "feels right" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts.

While we on the 'left' can put links to facts and figures to buttress our arguments while often are adversaries point to nothing at all other than 'lite on facts' hard right-wing websites that are easily refuted.

I'd have a hard time believing a couple of these, but who knows. I don't know if insane is the right word, but they definitely seem to reject reality. My father recently said to me he'd bet a million dollars that Obama wasn't born in the US. I didn't even know what to say to that.

You should have bet him, and gotten it in writing. :biggrin1:

You should've taken the bet and doubled down by challenging him on Ted Cruz' birthplace.

And considering their news source who can blame them for their level of ignorance? Fox News' Anna Kooiman Falls For Parody About Obama Funding Muslim Museum

Here ya go.

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2013/PPP_Release_National_1002.pdf

Every group has it's share of... most seem to be comfortable calling them "the uninformed". Nicer than saying "conspiracy nuts" or "stupid people". Democrats have our share of nut jobs, but we don't let them gain public office nor do our leaders seek their endorsement. When did the Republicans get infected with this and how long are they going to wait to seek treatment?
