The two that I know of have made me STRONGLY reconsider my desire to someday visit this country. If these two sad souls are in ANY way representative of the population at large then... ugh. Sadly, I think these two people are the only two Belgians I have had much contact with, and I'd hate to think they are suitable ambassadors of the general population of Belgium. By contrast, most of the Dutch I know are pretty cool people and I loved visiting that country. Considering the close physical, social and historical proximity of the two nations I would have assumed they had a pretty similar culture and this was part of the reason I wanted to visit.

So where are the cool Belgians out there? Is there such a thing? Speak up. please.

Belgium consists of two very different cultures, Flemish and Walloon. The Flemish are closer in similarity to the Dutch while the Walloon are more French. Belgium has nearly come to a velvet revolution ala Czechoslovakia over this issue in the past.

My experience with Belgies has been great. In fact my cousin's husband is Belgie and I think he's great. On top of that, he can cook! Belgies can cook and many think their cuisine better than that of France.

All the Belgians I've known have been nice people. I think you know this already but judging a nation by two of its inhabitants is unfair.

And yes, I've been to Belgium.

I have been to Belgium five times. The Flemish are very similar to the Dutch of course while the Walloons have a strong Celtic background, hence their name. Belgium is essentially an artificial contry created from the Netherlands in 1830 for political/religious reasons and so the national identity has never been clear and this is something many people find disturbing although personally I am quite comfortable with that. Of course all 'nations' have their wierdos and the Belgians can be a bit differently wierd but I have met some very very nice ones as well :)

Why do they have a train station if the only other thing there is cows? Cows don't use trains. That doesn't make a lot of sense.

Ok, slight exaggeration, but it has a rep all accross Europe for being the most boring country. I went there once (on the train, lol) and I found nothing of interest except the waffles and a couple of women who turned out to be tourists aswell

I live in Belgium. Just as in every other country we have friendly and unfriendly inhabitants.

I wouldn't say it's all boring or all of us are boring... a lot depends on what you're looking for in a country.

I find Belgium to be a nice place to live, it's one of Europe's most progressive countries, right there next to the Netherlands.
(for example: gay marriage allowed , prostitution legalized,...)
We have 3 national languages and quite some cultural herritage.

It's not Ibiza, but there are lots of places to have fun or to party

And let's not forget we are known all over Europe and far beyond for our great Beer, the best french fries and chocolates.

If you are curious about Belgium... just come and check it out.

    cool. sounds nice.

So you're not all uninformed American-hating communist eurotrash elitists who think your own shit don't stink? That's good news.

hope nobody is taking this thread too personally...

Bruxelles is the EC´s capital, so we can say that there is a third thing besides a train station and cows:

    A lot of whores.

I've spent a lot of time in Europe and am looking forward to my next visit. I'd go to Spain before Belgium, though. It's higher on my list of places I want to go.
