hey guys, just would love to do a quick cognitive check in as the headlines seem to get worse every day. I'd love to keep it as sane, polite, clear minded and sans snark as possible. But i feel like things are spiraling out of control in the US and will only get worse in November. we're dealing with COVID that wont end soon, we got social unrest, the Dollar is losing value... I'm deeply concerned. I'm not a tin foil hat guy and sadly I didn't just sell an IPO so i can go bunker down for a year and wait this out.

I live in a HCL area and part of me thinks i need to just sell everything, pack up and get out of town, like go full Bear Grylls and live in the woods in montana or something. maybe i'm being crazy? maybe I'm overreacting? my question is, do you think we can come back from the brink with all that's going on? or am i just being sensitive to a media algorithm that seeks clicks and inciting panic is just a unintended consequence?

what's your sober, clear minded, hot take? i know everybody here takes great pride on how smart they are and know all the answers. So please, i'd love to hear your best take! thank you!

I was out doing some shopping, every parking lot is packed with cars. Retail will show a huge quarter loss; but Americans do like to shop , in stores and online

Are we going to get through this? Well, mankind has muddled through a lot of things - wars, the Black Death, etc. But, IMO, a lot of damage is being done by all sorts of folks (media, politicians, health "experts") who have more-or-less caused a panic in hundreds of millions of people. I'm retired but feel very sorry for the millions worldwide who've been stripped of their jobs because businesses were closed.

Businesses are going to be long-impacted. Many have realized that there's no need for large office spaces when the right people can work from home or remotely from anywhere. Why build a 30-, 40-, 100-story office building when going to an office might no longer be necessary for successful business operations?

Retail shopping space is going to continue to take a hit as more and more people are advancing to on-line shopping and delivery to home.

Frankly, I can't imagine going to a movie theater, performance venue, stadium, etc. wearing a mask particularly for something outdoors. Here in Flyover Country, the summers are brutal - high heat and humidity. A mask isn't comfortable in those conditions.

An effective vaccine and/or effective drug treatment for someone infected are absolutely necessary for things to return to something that resembles "normal".

I live in the UK, we're in this for the long haul, it's going to take a very long time to get back to what people were used to.

I beleive we will get through this. I think that a vaccine will be developed and marketed around the first of the year. That will help. I think the economy is poised for a rebound. As to the unrest the protesters will either get what they want or just give it up. Yes thinks might seem kind of bleak right now but i think it will get better. My two cents..YMMV.

thank you for this. this is a very sober, insightful and measured response. I really appreciate your answer. I think you also successfully identified the broad extent of the parties to blame as well. It's not just one thing. I agree with you 100%.

it's also interesting that you're in flyover country. i really appreciate that perspective. as someone who lives in a HCL major city, and was close to many riots and protests, I have felt that tug and question "why am I here? what am I doing killing myself for this roof over my head?" we only have 1 life to live. do i want to spend it living week to week in this place for the rest of my life? I guess the grass is always greener, but it' be nice to have some peace and tranquility. I dunno.

I think about what we're going through now and I wonder about though, the 60s & 70s with race riots, the kennedy assassination, VIetnam. I guess then it was much worse? I wasn't alive then, so I don't know. But i guess we survived it. I agree with you, however we overcome, it will take a long time, sadly.

thank you. I like your take. i hope you're right. It seems though, that it will take some time either way for these questions to be answered. Hopefully there will be a vaccine, but it will take time. I would imagine though, once we get it, there will be some immediate relief, rebound and optimism -- ie, "we're back!" and things will springboard. I do hope too that once jobs are back and some sense of confidence the unrest will go away as people will have jobs and meaning and optimism. let's hope.
