Are we individuals or do we obey to frameworks?

I’m reading that “Social psychological theory provides useful frameworks for understanding the intra-/intergroup dynamics among […] subgroups of gay men.” (*)
Random fuckers’ self-centred behaviour would be a widespread framework.

Do you think that framework theory works?
Are we individuals who meet other individuals by chance?
Or would we more successful if we viewed us as a sub-group, then identified their signs of recognition and dynamics?
As a more general question, hat are the sub-groups or frameworks you can identify?
