I don't know anywhere where waiters/waitresses only work for tips, where's that then Dong?
Then, to be frank, thats not a job, is it. It's voluntery assistance or charity at worst.
If you work, have a job, you are paid for it, no?
To rely solely on the generosity of customers for your wages is a tad shocking for a 1st world country and honestly, it's wrong.

Yes a tip is optional, the rest - not true.
If the service is splendid I over tip
If the service is good I tip 20%
If it's average 15%
If it's bad 10% (due to the fault of the waiter, not the kitchen or crowd of the room)
If it's horrible (rudeness etc) I talk to the manager or owner and there is no tip
I read the title of the thread, saw who created it and thought to myself, "Pecker is an avowed conservative, he most likely never tips."
I didn't even need to read the post to know this...
Do you know that the federal government assumes that you gave him her a 10% tip?
YES
Do you know that for every meal that a waiter or waitress serves that 10% of the total value of that meal is added to their gross earnings?
YES
IF YOU DON'T TIP, YOU ARE STEALING FROM YOUR SERVERS... PLAIN AS SIMPLE...
Not if the service was not good! The worst tip I ever left was 2 cents, and that was to ensure the waitperson knew that I didn't forget them.
That tip was very intentional, to point out such horrible service.
IF YOU DON'T WANNA TIP, THEN EAT AT THE LOCAL BUFFET OR ORDER TAKE-OUT. THERE IS ALWAYS A FAST FOOD RESTAURANT AROUND THE CORNER FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN TIPPING.
People in the USA who don't believe in tipping are costing their waitstaff money. But to imply that a tip is always due is going too far. I tip between 15 to 20%, leaning more towards the higher end for good service. So-so service will get about 10%. Bad service will get nothing, but that is extremely rare.

YOU NEED TO PRACTICE CONSERVATISM WITHIN IN YOUR OWN FAMILY AND LEAVE IT AT THE DOOR WHEN YOU ASSOCIATE WITH OTHER HUMANS. ACT LIKE YOU HAVE EMOTIONS AND DO THE RIGHT THING.
Ive never understood what and why Americans tip?

Why do you tip in America?
Arn't waiters and waitresses actually being paid to do the job anyways? It's a little rude to expect a tip for just doing your job.
It dosent make sense.
But it's little different to sale staff on commission only isn't it?

If you would actually read other people's posts then you would know that in post#16 I already explained why there is a need to tip your server in the U.S.
In America, which is what we are talking about in this thread.
Yeah, you tell those damned non- American uncircumcised communists.
Im English and lived in the UK for 29 years, tipping is not required or expected and the vast vast majority do not tip unless you recieve exceptional service.
People are paid for their services by their employer, not the customer.
Commission only roles are very rare due to company fears of breaching the minimum wage acts. They are usually only associated with very high profile margin jobs and i repeat, very rare.
Being paid 10% of £10,000 sale is not the same as bringing a plate of food to a table, is it?
Why don't you explain for us Americans how tipping is done in Canada? I am curious...
I hate to brag, but I'm a REALLY good tipper! It took two weeks of waiting tables to realize how much shit that servers have to go through. The other night, I went out with a friend to the bar... All I had was an order of cheesy fries and a coke. My bill was $4.30... I gave him $10. I normally tip between 50% and 100% if my total tab is under $10. I never tip less than 20% unless the service was just THAT bad.
Maybe you're just tight.:tongue::biggrin1:
