About the only thing I don't eat is cheese (never liked it, even as a kid), though that cuts a lot of things out from typical "American" fare. So I hear from a lot of people that I'm missing out on so much, and I shouldn't be so restricted. However, I have eaten foods from many different cultures, and am willing to try anything that doesn't have cheese in it.

I remember one time as a waiter a guest at my table asked me if I ever tried something on the menu, and I said that no, I hadn't, because I don't like cheese and it had cheese all over it. The guy seemed aghast, and replied "You can't say you don't like cheese. They're all so different. There's cheddar, brie, swiss...." I quickly asked him if he liked eating dog meat. He said "of course not." So I added "But there are so many different kinds. There are poodles, labrador retrievers, yorkshire terriers..." His wife laughed, and said "Good for you. You shut him up on that one." And he must have enjoyed that quip, because they tipped me well.

I wish I was so lucky Rubi.

If I don't have to cook it... I'm eating it. Thank you, that was the best **** I ever had!

In truth, I hate picky eaters...and I'm not talking about you people with food allergys, I talking about those who go...ewwwww at food items.

As I said originally, things actually do taste bad. Most of us don't say eww to people we don't know, we say "I don't like x."

I was planning on getting back to this thread, but I had things to do after I made it, and it was already pushed back when I got a chance to check in on it. So I just let it slip, so thanks Rubi for bumping it.

I am the pickiest eater you will ever meet.
I also work in a restaurant. I don't ever have a problem taking orders from picky people with one exception. I'd rather you tell me what you don't want then to bring out something that hasn't been altered and have to send it back. Sometimes the memos to the cooks are overlooked and something slips onto a plate that you didn't want. If that happens, I'd be happy to fix it for you. Just don't always blame the server because half of the cooks on the line can't read.

That being said, there is a couple that comes into the place I work routinely. They are the biggest pains in the asses about their food. Whichever server has them usually gets a laundry list. And they ALWAYS send shit back. The old couple yells at eachother and can be quite rude. We don't really understand why they keep coming back if they always send their food back.

But yes, I'm a very picky eater and I've been told by a date that it makes me unrefined and undateable. But I don't care. I know what I like, what I want and what I don't.

I am an extremely picky eater. My philosophy is that if I am paying for it, then I have a right to want what I want and how I want it. Besides, if I am not happy with the meal, do I have an option of only paying for what I liked? I think not.... Same type of principle, I think.

Actually, you'd be surprised. I've had issues before say with a steak and shrimp dinner @ the rest. where I work, and if the woman says the steak is over done, but still ate the shrimp, we'd probably only charge her for the shrimp if she didn't want a new steak.

People can get away with murder at certain restaurants. I had a guy once put his own fucking pubic hair in a chicken breast, because he changed his mind and wanted a burger. ! Both of which he didn't have to pay for.

I'm an omnivore other than not eating mammals for ethical reasons. So's my brother. But my mother and her sister were both picky eaters and there definitely seems to be a genetic factor. Here's one link:

I feel sorry for people with this genetic trait because it really seems to reduce their sensual pleasure in life.

I saw an entertaining article a couple months ago on restauranteurs that have 'fired' customers.

In essence, after having had to deal with the same overly demanding or disorderly customers on multiple occasions, the restauranteur orders them out (without charging them for what had already been served) and not to come back. An literal blacklist was involved!

I got a kick out of the story. While I've never worked in a restaurant, I have seen diva diners spoil an evening out for everyone around them.

I've never been a server, but my mom was and I know other people who are/were. And I've seen things happen. So in my experience, managers are pushovers when it comes to bad customers. Even if they think otherwise, which most of the probably do, they believe that the appropriate behavior is to give them their free meal, and get them out. Unfortunately it can debase the staff unfairly, especially the server who is usually there to hear all of it. I can only assume those are the guidelines for most manager positions and deviating from that could get you fired or in trouble. It's unfortunate how harsh it can be on the already fragile relationship between staff and manager. I think you can get a free meal at least once in just about any restaurant. Assuming it wasn't actually legitimate though you could only get away with it like once or twice before they refuse you service or something like that.

Customers can be so awful though, it can be pretty disgusting. I've got a friend who is a great server. He is always polite, can talk to anyone, knows the ins and outs of it all. He's only gotten one complaint at his current work place. The complaint was about this and this and blah blah, on and he is just so gay. Which means everything else was either a delusion by the person on top of hating gay people, or just hating gay people. It could go either way. He isn't flamingly homosexual or anything. I mean you can tell, but it isn't in your face, and people love him.

I don't know if this is common in other countries, but I think in America there is a serious under appreciation of people in food service industry. I used to go out on half days with some guys for lunch. Big group, 10-12 people usually. None of them tipped! They all had jobs except me too! I tried tip as much as I could but it was never what they deserved and I apologized for them. Fucking assholes. </rant>

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you. I mean, I've been serving for 8 years. It's how I put myself through college, and even now that I have another job, I'm STILL serving. The managers do what corporate wants. Corporate wants people to come back even after they've had a bad experience. Corporate wants people to tell their friends about how well they were taken care of even if the meal went poorly. There are times I'll tell a manager about what a bitch the table was being, but it doesn't really matter.
For me, since I've been doing this so long, I will rarely get involved. It's gotten to the point where as soon as I hear the customer start to complain, I usually just cut them off with "Ok, I'll go get the manager." Bottom line = I don't get paid enough to sit here and listen to you whine. I just don't deal with it. The one good thing about that couple who always complained and has a laundry list of modifications is - they never get their meals comped - and they always pay/tip accordingly. So they don't ever really get told not to come back.

I WISH we did this at our restaurant!! We're way too corporate. There was one incident with who we call "The Potato Soup People". The PSP would come in at least once a week and order 3 cups of pot soup and 1 bowl of pot soup. No matter what, they'd always complain that the soups didn't have enough broth in them. Well, it's a fucking creamy potato soup. It's not super brothy. So the managers would give in time and time again and bring them an extra cup of soup for free. Finally, one night, our manager went over there and laid into them. Telling them that they never fail to complain about the portion of soup, that our portions are measured, and that no one complains about it like they do. The father of the family was taken aback. My manager said if they want more soup, they're going to be charged for it. They walked out without paying or tipping the server. But the server was more than happy to have taken that one for the team. The PSP ended up writing to corporate and getting $40 in certificates for free meals, but we've never seen them back in. The son of the family came in with the comp meal tickets with a date. He was also cheap.

We have certain names for troubling customers. And when there's new servers on staff, we like to send them out to those tables cuz it's kind of funny. Thanks for the article though:) I'll probably print it out and bring it to work.

I eat everything. I've never sent anything back to a kitchen in my life. If you have, you got it back with spit in it. Picky eaters are more likely to be fat, because as they whittle away at all the things they will or will not eat, almost all of the things that they are 'picky' about are the things that are good for them. I find that picky eaters don't eat vegetables... or anything else that is good for them. I find it not a matter of choice (even though it really is), but an lack of maturity. Beyond that, I find picky eaters to be selfish people. I'm sure noe of this will make any difference in anybody's eating habits, just remember, when you are pissing off the people in the kitchen, you will probably get a little extra goo in your meal.
Maybe it doesn't need to be said... I can't stand picky eaters. I wont date them, I wont be friends with them and I will certainly never, ever go to a restaurant with any of them.

I don't think I'm a picky eater, per say. However, there are certain things that make me truly quesy whenever I see them:

Any type of dried/reconsituted anything. Fruit in particular.
I'm not a big meat-eater, so seeing a steak can make me ill. I have never understood why this is. If it bleeds, I'm gone from the table. Plus, I have to cook them at home occasionally for my hubby:-(
Powerded Protien: powder, bar or beverage. Yuck.

Otherwise, if it's white, has sugar or cream in it, I will prop have seconds.
