Are you actually making the world a better place?

I have spent 20 years of my life flying refueling aircraft for the USAF, and in the process have helped kicking the butts of more than one man who wanted to make the world a worse place (Saddam, Muhammar, Omar, to name a few). Does that make me someone who made it a better place? Probably in an indirect way *wild discussion ensues*

Also, the combined emissions from my fascination for motorization have brought a number of environmental activists to the scene, and have provided their words with credibility.

My baseline is hoping to end any given day feeling I've not actively made it worse. Any variance from that is likely to be dependent on many factors over which I may or not have direct influence.

That probably sounds like a cop out but I try to be responsible yet realistic and don't seek to delude myself about the scale of impact I can alone can make.

I make the world a better place, by, among other things, being a pronatalist.

No, that means what you want to do is make the world a more crowded place.

I don't donate blood though, although it would seem an obvious "pro-life" thing to do, because medical costs and insurance are way overpriced, and why should I donate for free, for them to turn around and price-gouge the person who gets my blood? Either reduce the costs, or pay me for my time. My "charity" need not be greedy overcharging corporations.

I thought at least some blood donors got paid in the US? Still, it's reassuring to know that you put your own (financial) interests first. So, how is that view from the moral high ground today?

Because, yes...this perfectly describes the Red Cross.

Uncut also suggested the Red Cross was a rip off, I asked him why but he didn't say.

The Red Cross is nothing but a rip off. Plain and simple.

I can't imagine why but I doubt his reason was any more plausible than pronatalist's.

I think someone who might otherwise die without a blood transfusion might appreciate your charity.
(I can't give blood because I lived in Europe during the mid 1980s, and the blood peeps in Canada consider that a cause for disqualification.)

Improving the world? Not really. The Earth is quite capable of fending for itself.

Have I tried to improve the conditions for humans and other animals on this spinning, round thingy? Yea, not a lot but i have done some things.

What?! Why the fuck?

I lived in europe in the mid eighties - me and about 400 million others, and an awful lot of us get to give blood! Hell, I've even had some of it transfused back... and so far I haven't gone funny(ier?)

You Canadians

I suspect they're worried he may have acquired some err...culture. The microscopic kind of course, eh Rubi?

Hope you're paying attention Mr. Balls.

Yeah, I think so. Sometimes I'm not entirely sure... My intentions are good. But you know what they say about intentions and how they are used to pave the way to a certain hot place. Georgia? The Atlanta metro area had the hottest summer in 20 years, just when I moved down here.

Lissen up, dummy.
I think it's because of the fear of certain meat-carried illnesses. If you lived in Europe, then you were exposed anyway.
Canada wasn't exposed at that time, so a blood donation ban probably made some sense.
This is my theory. I have lots of those. Perhaps some of them are true.

I suspect they're worried he may have acquired some err...culture. The microscopic kind of course, eh Rubi?

Dong's got it (no pun intended).
Actually, the Europeans immediately elected me to their cultural elites ... and I'm not kidding. I interpreted Proust to the Parisiens.
It was shock and awe, my visit.

Hope you're paying attention Mr. Balls.

You mean SBB, or me? (Actually, I could answer truthfully to the tag 'sweatyblueballs.' Which I guess would make me another SBB. But that's a [temporary] coincidence.)
Get this broad off my back, dong.

I like to think that my work in special education is making the world a better place and that I can effect change by living by example (even when my example is not the best).

I used to give blood, until I started dating men and was immediately disqualified. I am type-O, too, which is a shame.

Some.
My work is teaching in a helping profession. All the lights in our house are compact flourecents. We keep the thermostat at 66 degrees during winter, recycle trash, try to fix things instead of buying new ones, attempt to reduce our driving (which is difficult living in the wilds). I try to practice kindness as much as I can. Not much, but it's a start.
