Do you even know what Gluten is?

yea my family member has celiacs disease, no need for sass. Anyways "gluten-free" is the latest craze, everything is gluten free these days. But the reality is that unless you have the disease, you shouldnt have to avoid gluten. people treat wheat products like aids these days. Dunkin Donuts just opened their new line of gluten-free donuts.

I eat and drink many things that are unhealthy and it does not phase me, so eliminating gluten from my diet has not even crossed my mind.

Not entirely true.

Gluten and wheat are the primary causes of acid reflux.
Long term acid reflux is what leads to esophageal cancer... and, right now, the western world is suffering from a huge spike in esophageal cancers.

Forum member Jason Els died from it. So did Christopher Hitchens.

Human beings consumption of wheat based foods has grown steadily... from breakfast cereals to pasta, to croutons and hamburgers, and all manner of sandwiches, cookies, cakes, and more.
Its really hard to avoid wheat.

Even for those without celiac disease... it is extremely wise to reduce wheat intake with age... and in particular, avoid eating wheat within about 8 to 6 hours of going to bed.

Although both caffeine and alcohol also contribute to GIRD... they are secondary to wheat, and are far easier to reduce in intake.
The big culprit is wheat.

If you suffer from sour stomach or heartburn frequently.... its not the salsa... its the bread.
Cut it back.

yea gluten is found in wheat even in beer. Almost everything has wheat. I try to avoid to be honest i substitute for corn and quinua pasta. Its more protein and causes less bloating. Worst food for an irritable belly is pizza.

Gluten-free here due to celiac disease. It's strange where wheat and wheat by-products are found. The food industry uses it as a thickening agent in such things as certain salad dressing. You can also pick up something as simple as a chicken and rice dinner and find wheat listed as an ingredient. It can also be found in a lot of "brown sauce" Chinese food. Never hurts to carefully read those labels.

Gluten free not by choice but by body malfunction. Can't eat it now. There goes homemade breads, cakes, cookies, etc. On the plus side(no pun intended), I've lost weight.

I wonder if there's a connection between the rise in gluten free diets and the GMO's used to produce wheat?

I believe there is. If you look at wheat from 50 years ago compared to today, you can see how much it has changed. Wheat was genetically modified to increase the gluten content to make baked goods taste better. The consequence of this is a rise in gluten intolerances.

As I've become older, my love for bread has had to be restricted...bugga. I find that modern day bread is under baked. I've found if you toast it there does not seem to be as much of a problem. I think bread these days is too doh'y, has not been baked long enough, maybe to preserve shelf life.
