I'm not a big fan of geographical cures, but then I've never lived anyplace like what you're describing (at least since high school). Personally I can't imagine trying to live my life in a place where the majority loathed me on contact for what I though, whom i loved or how I chose to live.

That's one of the reasons why I'm more a tribalist than an assimilationist. I'm not advocating segregation (at all) but I do feel more comfortable living in places where being gay's either no big deal or where it's kind of expected (like where I live right now). I like to be challenged on my own terms thanks.

Sometimes geographical cures actually do work, though! If you live in a culture that is hostile to who you are, and there is another place that is more open, moving to the more open place would do a person a lot of good.

I've lived in Indianapolis and San Antonio as well as rural Indiana. I didn't move to either city for the political atmosphere (both cities are conservative, although not as conservative as where I grew up). I moved there for jobs. I'd love to live in a place that is more open to my views, though.

Honestly, in your case a geographical cure might well be in order. Myself, I'm only happy living in a real city in the thick of everything.

I've been "out" since I was 14 years-old. It was rather hard to conceal being a blossoming screaming teen queen. And I've always communicated to coworkers and employees that I'm still out (though no longer a screaming teen queen, upon which experience and age have a great effect). But like Mr. Bbucko, I would never live anywhere I would be held in contempt for who I am. However, for a while I would lie and say I was Canadian, because it was obvious that admitting I was a US citizen would be harmful to my physical health. But I've never had to act as if I have a magic closet I can go hide in when it comes to my sexuality.

Ironically, since Geroge W. left the presidency, I can proudly claim to be an 'Mericuhn and the citizens of my adopted home think that's really swell. It's still a new feeling, though.

In my current situation, it wouldn't be advisable or good for my health. In the past, I was openly bisexual and you'd be surprised at the number of come-ons a young bi guy gets from "str8" older men in the workplace.

I wonder how many of you are out at work. I'm asking because I'm pretty opened about my sexuality with friends and family but for some reason when it comes to work, I tend to be more discrete about it. I feel I need to be that way because I've had some bad situations in the past where some of my co-workers/supervisors held it against me only because I was gay. It wasn't even like I hit on them. And to think that as a society we have advanced with all this.

Good question. I'm "out" at work and I work in Washington, DC (which is 85% gay) and I work for the federal government. However, I, also, am a partner at an architecture firm and I'm not out there...at all.

I find in my industry, there is an interesting mix...it seems that Flight Attendants are allowed to be gay and nobody thinks anything of it. By comparison, being a pilot, its a "Good Old Boys" club and most of the people that I work with are conservative and homosexuality is something that is frowned upon. Pilots are supposed to be married with a pretty wife, 2 kids and a Golden Retriever.
