How do people like McCance get elected to the school board in the first place? I think we can safely assume that this is not the first time he's made his homophobic views known.

Most likely this^ is the reason he apologised. Not through any remorse or regret for his outrageous views.

Some years ago there was a very homophobic man who ran for the position of Police Chief in Cathedral City in the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs in California. By the time he ran for office most of the gay rights we have in place were already there. Yet, the man made promises to the extremist Christian Churches that "he" was going to do everything to drive the "gay population" out of Cathedral City. This man worked purely from a religious viewpoint and went to the churches which had the most "extremist" viewpoints in the Coachella Valley. He talked about closing gay bars, he talked about tons of things he could in fact not legally do. The "sheep" however stood there enthralled by his preaching of hatred from these pulpits and they gave him what he needed. What did he need? He needed money! The groups he targeted for fund raising were within themselves extremist groups. The man went into a campaign with a pretty good war chest. He lost in the end when everything that was "veiled" and known to a few to use a term "came out" in a public debate that was televised on local cable access. He made the mistake and slipped. His venom started flowing on camera and he and his campaign for a new "rein of terror" was killed. If he had not slipped and fallen days before the election there is little doubt he would have made it.

This homophobic idiot came from Arkansas. He was bankrolled by the churches down in the Bible Belt and there is little doubt. Remember that money can come from many places and the happy group in Salt Lake City will do everything they can to send tons of Osmond /Romney money to anyone spouting ant-gay venom. The idea being that even if they don't win they are going to scare the other candidates into submission on gay rights issues.

Currently the City of Palm Springs has a carbon copy violating civil rights all over the place and making major headaches for the city as he arrests men without grounds. The cases go to court and are thrown out. The problem is that he is costing the City a great deal of money and those falsely arrested are fighting back by filing lawsuits by the dozens agains the City.

Just remember always follow the money! Follow the money and you'll figure out quickly how people get into office.

This makes me sad, because for every guy who is able to stand up and fight back there will be other guys who have their lives ruined, even if the case is unlawful. If the money lasts longer than the will of people to fight then there is a gradual, insidious erosion of rights and equality the LGBT community have managed to secure over the last 20 or 30 years.
