Researchers say helmets must go to make American football safer

Published on Dec 23, 2015
The idea of taking off protective gear in a contact sport might seem odd, but that is exactly what's being looked at.The University of New Hampshire college team dedicated part of their training sessions… to doing drills without wearing protective helmets. Comanche leads out of Sydney Heads/ONE OF THE BEST EVER

Comanche leads out of Sydney Heads in Sydney-to-Hobart

Comanche leads the 71st Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, as the fleet heads down the coast en route to Constitution Dock.

71st Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race is under way, with supermaxi Comanche getting a jump on defending line honours holder Wild Oats XI to lead the fleet out of Sydney Heads at the start of the journey to Constitution Dock.

The 108-strong fleet features a record 27 international challengers, including other line honours candidates such as Comanche and Rambler 88.

Wild Oats XI, skippered by Mark Richards, got the jump at the start, crossing its rivals to take the lead on Sydney Harbour.

However Perpetual Loyal edged in front and rounded the first mark ahead of Comanche and Wild Oats XI.

"Hey big fella, we just got hosed," Richards was heard to exclaim on board Wild Oats XI on the Seven Network, as the favourite was caught behind in the initial tacking duel.

In a rapidly shifting race, Comanche then picked up a burst of speed to pass Loyal and become the third leader in the first 13 minutes of the race.

The American supermaxi, skippered by Ken Read, was first out of the heads before putting on a big sail to pull well ahead of its rivals.

Wild Oats XI, Rambler 88 and Ragamuffin 100 were all battling for second place as the fleet began to move down the coast.

By mid-afternoon, Rambler 88 had moved ahead into outright second, with Wild Oats XI and Ragamuffin 100 following behind.

Nudist swimmers to the rescue at Sydney to Hobart yacht race

It quickly became apparent that those on board needed help - and luckily, some keen swimmers leapt into action

Hundreds of people watched a cheeky rescue unfold on Saturday afternoon after a small boat got into trouble and started sinking during the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in Sydney east, Australia.

About 1.30pm, masses of spectators began to walk from South Head back towards Watsons Bay after watching the fleet of more than 100 yachts depart Sydney Harbour for the annual race.

As the crowds passed Lady Bay Beach, which caters to nudists, some began to giggle.

At first, Chris Pearce thought the boat was coming in to drop someone off.

Then, a small boat close to shore got into trouble.

Getty photographer Chris Pearce, who was walking back with the crowd after taking photos of the racing yachts, said nothing seemed amiss at first as the wooden boat came around Sydney Heads and started to pull close to the beach.

When doubts could have eroded the spirit of any one of the 19-strong crew on the world 24-hour record holding boat, Hinze-Clark impressed him by her belief that winning line honours was still on the cards.

"She's our head cheerleader. I keep telling her we don't have much of a rudder and she keeps asking if we're still going to win," Read said of Hinze-Clark after he decided to continue racing.

Kenya athletes banned over doping scandal

Published on Jan 14, 2016
Kenyan athletes are wondering whether their country will be named in the report and if they will be banned from competitions like Russia. But, unlike Russia, since there are no allegations of a state-sponsored doping programme, they hope they won’t.Malcolm Webb reports from the western kenyan city of Iten.
