My hubby says all black women will find this question a touch difficult:

"How Stella...." or "Waiting To Exhale"?

Flame Boy,

Perhaps you can rephrase your question? What are you asking exactly? Are all black women trying to "... get their groove back" or "Waiting to Exhale"? Or do we all love Terri McMillan's books or will we burn your clothing and sell your golf clubs for 10 cents when you leave us for a white woman who looks like Barbie or will we run off to Jamaica and find a man half our age who is secretly gay, bring him back to the states, marry him and then suddenly discover this fact 10 years later?

Sorry if this has been covered already, I haven't been keeping up with the thread every day.

I know you moved from 'north' to 'south' a while back. My perception of the US (having spent fuck all time there, though I'm planning to change that) is that the northern states are, while not perfect (where is?), less racist and sexist than the southern states.

Firstly, is that true - or is it just different kinds of racism and sexism? Secondly, does that effect you? I mean have you changed the way you do anything since you moved to a culturally different area?

(Background: I ask because I have moved from a place where I was a first language speaking 'native' to a rural backwater of a country where I am a foreigner who has a 'funny accent' - the attitude towards women and the perception of women's behaviour here is different and I find myself forced, in someways, into different behaviour, e.g. not going into cafés alone. I was wondering if you've had a similar experience?)

You got it! Definitely. "Stella" was a case of "What I did on Summer vacation".
Exactly!

Now about your previous post. I admit I am often naive and grew up very sheltered from most of the world. But there is no way in hell a gay man could sleep in my bed for 10 years and I not know it. She's either lying or dumber than a box of rocks.

LOL! I Think she was trying to work with it ! LOL! I think it just got to the point where he probably was running through her money and embarassing her so she had to take care of bidness. I would have been afraid to play any woman who cut her mama's boyfriend as a child. No joke, Terri is the Gen- u- wine article.

Excellent question and I understood every word even with your funny accent. :biggrin1:

That is the common perception. I have only lived in Georgia about 13 months and have honestly yet to encounter any overt or covert racism. It may be the limited circles in which I travel, I'm not sure though. In the north when I was younger the racism was definetely overt and in your face. However, as an adult in the workplace the racism is definetely covert and there is a lot of it. Sexism, I only encountered when I worked in the male dominated field of engineering.

Firstly, is that true - or is it just different kinds of racism and sexism? Secondly, does that effect you? I mean have you changed the way you do anything since you moved to a culturally different area?
I hadn't thought of it that way but yes, there are different types or levels or racism and sexism in the south, than in the north.

Yes, I find that I am far less brazen when I receive poor customer service. I made that mistake at a Hilton or a Sheraton in Mt. Pleasant, SC once and realized I needed to dial it back a notch. Those white people had never seen a black woman that didn't know her place before. :lmao:

I have not ventured out to any of the local clubs or bars because I am afraid some good ol' boy will rape me, kill, me and leave me for dead in a ditch. Hence meeting someone is difficult because I prefer white men, but I can't tell a racist from a liberal just by looking at him. They really should wear signs so I'll know.

The other weird and very annoying thing to me is that everyone black and white is shocked to find out I am 42 and have never been married or had children. They always ask both questions 2 or 3 times. Then they give me that look. That look that says, she must be a lesbian, then they stop talking and look away. I sometimes jump in and explain that it's not for lack of trying; but somehow that just makes me seem more pathetic.

People in this part of the south tend to get married right out of high school or college. I find that bizarre. I think there was one couple that got married after my hs graduation out of a class of almost 400. In the north weddings are large and expensive but they aren't done until one is out of college, usually quite a few years out of college.

All the white people I meet are shocked that I have no discernible accent. e.g. I don't talk black. Some have accused me of putting on airs, but I'm not. It's just the way I talk.

Word! I would not mess with her.

From an outsiders perspective - agreed!
In regards to "Stella" - Terry got burned, man I still remember that episode of Oprah.

So do I!

Did you see the "Today" show before "Oprah"?
No, I missed that!

She had an extremely traumatic childnood and at least two of her early books were somewhat autobiographical. She went off totally on the today show. I thought she was ready to cut the brother right there and then. It was quite deep.

I didn't, but you don't have to, you just need a little common sense. Believe it or not, black women aren't robots that were built all the same, apart from society, and they don't always need to be explained with a fucking instruction manual so keep your smart-ass comments to yourself unless you're going to atleast use .00001 ounces of common fucking sense.

Get a grip marley. At least once in a while let the women answer for themselves.

Hmmm you aren't meeting the right white people. I know very few black people who speak ghetto.

Hello Black Girl(s) - Do you think one day somebody will love me as much as I love you?

How poetic... One never knows. Isnt it amazing the sides of many of us that are only released on the electronic pages of the internet? Perhaps they just dont see your fun side, Catch. I truly hope so...

I usually share my favorite poem by Alexander Pushkin which expresses the sentiment so beautifully. Today I am going to share one of my own.

Read me my rights
Loving you is like playing with fire
I crave the warmth, but I don’t want to feel the burn.
My arms ache to hold you and be held in turn
But how high would the price be ?
Would you take my passion and hurt me with it
Like the Mirandas would you hold it against me
At a time when passion and desire are no longer enough
To hold back the contempt, when my body is not trim
And firm and hard enough to defend itself against the heart blows
That you inflict on me will you throw me into the street
And seek yet another who is not as demanding and greedy
For something it can no longer command as quid pro quo
But can only hope to receive out of grace without retribution?
Touch me, love me, keep me, hold me. I promise I won’t take too much.

What the fuck are you talking about, are you on crack? Naughty AND NJ asked for my input once or twice and I've only given it one or twice. Stop drinking the anti-Marley koolaid, it's poison especially to NJ's wonderful thread.
