Oh for the love of Christ! Isn't it enough you get to claim the previous 43 presidents as your own because they were white? If not, why not. :irked:

The phrase which you seem to enjoy quoting below has to do with the fact that many blacks are light enough to 'pass for white'. Most blacks can tell who in a room of true caucasians is merely trying to pass. White people usually have no clue.

In a post-racial society, I, as a caucasian, should have exactly the same stake in claiming Barack Obama as "my own" (the white mother), as njqt does because of the Kenyan father.

There. I said it.

So I'll quote njqt one last time: "Black people know their own. As do people of other ethnicities and cultural backgrounds"

and (dis)regard it as antiquated, pre-Obama thinking... a sentiment that the african-american community can snatch up and "claim" a mixed racial being as "their own". I HAVE AS EQUAL A CLAIM TO RACIAL & CULTURAL HERITAGE!

Somewhere along the line (probably after we're all dead), we'll come to the reasonable conclusion that we're all from planet earth -- and this commonality will take precedence, because in actuality, we're all multi-racial mutts and racial delineations will have to start to melt away (and it's happening now).

Musclebutt,

Because quite often people tend to make assessments based on appearance at least on a wide scale the idea of not being called black because of one drop of white blood really hasnt seemed to be a concern. .

I was thinking of mestizo culture, particularly in some parts of South America or the Carribean, where some people tend to play up whiteness to seek belonging to a higher caste.

(snip)
On a larger scale, blacks as a group have been pretty open to all who live under the designation of black. So that means in the bad times as well as in the good times. WHy shouldnt they be proud of those who have achieved ? They without question are given credit for many of the negatives in this country..

I think homosexual blacks would disagree with you on community acceptance. The hypcrisy of convenience irks me. Either accept everyone with a drop of blood as black or don't; even if they self destruct like OJ Simpson or Michael Jackson. However, the hypocrisy extends to whites as well. I would be much more impressed if someone that looks like Grace Jones, Oprah, or Missy Elliot wins an Oscar versus Halle Berry. A high yellow skin tone with caucasian facial features is not representative of the majority of blacks in this country. Racism is combined with sexism when Berry's win is taken in context with Forrest Whitaker's. He won't win any beauty contests any time soon.

As far as ala carte racial associations are concerned I tend to see other groups participate in the what I call, "My grandmother was an indian princess " syndrome since it has become fashionable or even profitable in some way to be a minority. Nobody wants to own you when you are down...
I see the media and black community's clamoring in the case of Tiger Woods as rather bizarre. His experiences represent a litmus test of America's present screwed up racial politics. Because his phenotype exhibits obvious African features he is treated black despite his background. He is half Fillipino, but I doubt he is acculturated Asian. Notwithstanding on whether they grew up in areas with other Asians, the predominant trend in America is for mixed Asians to acculturate white or marry white. As an example, Tiger Woods's wife is very Aryan looking. Is this a matter of personal preference? Possibly, but how many of our preferences are nothing more than successful indoctrination from racists stereotypes and marketing campaigns? Racism disguised as sexual preference is still racism.

Black Girl: I was born in the freaking '70's! How exactly am I "claiming" all 43 previous presidents "as my own"? In my own lifetime, I've detested GWB & have personally made no such claims.

I see eye-to-eye ideologically with Obama. All I said was that if YOU get to culturally "claim" him because of the Kenyan dad, I hold EQUAL CLAIM to cultural heritage because of the white mom. That is a perfectly reasonable proposal. To pose an argument against such obvious rationality is folly.

You are playing a game with this racial stuff, and I am simply beating you at at it. He's BOTH if ours.

There. Let's now close the book on this debate. We both "win".

Previous 43 presidents were white, NJQT? I dunno about that....I've read on the internet that Harding, Coolidge, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Eisenhower had Black ancestry. I even told that to my students after I did a writing assignment on their reaction to Obama's victory (I teach at a predominately African-American school).

Then of course, there's Bill Clinton, who may not have any Black ancestry, but is widely held as the Blackest president ever. Haha.

Willtom,

I dont think you get what we are saying. Up until very recently the white parts of the family didnt WANT to claim the black side. Obama himself had some rough patches even with his own family. He now identifies himself as a BLACK MAN because he was helped very early to know that his brown skin put him in that box. I am happy for you to claim his white side. But why dont we just claim him as fabulous and call it a day!

Muscle butt that has been a vestige of slavery that has tainted the entire new world. Blacks in America are not immune to this kind of foolishness either and it is time for us all to celebrate our beauty in every form. Unfortunately even today and here I have seen people told straight up that they were found wanting because of their ethnically related physical features. So we have a long way to go.

Musclebutt,

I was not talking about the homosexual community. We were discussing physical characteristics. The rejection of homosexuality among many in the black community has had more to do with religious beliefs than anything racially driven. No one is rejecting Michael or OJ. For good are bad they are who they are. Yes it is a shame that people can not see the beauty in all its variations but it has as much to do with outside influences as it does with the pathology within the black community. Halle is seen as more acceptable because she on a viceral level looks more like the mainstream. But that shouldnt take anything away from her. That is just as bad. We have too much of that as well already. Just live and let live.

As for Forest he has always been one of my favorite actors and I dont happen to find him unattractive. I am just glad he is finally getting some of the recognition he so deserves.

After reading that book a few years ago, I was convinced that like 60% of all men were on the down low. The percentage of black men currently on the down low . . . hmmm, I'm gonna go with 30%.

You don't know the Men's Chorus at my church. :biggrin1: I think it's more like 75%. LOL

Dear Black Girl ( wow this feels weird saying it), What part of NJ were you from because I am from NJ as well. Also about the downlow thing yeah I tink it's really hard to be on the down low any more because Gay Rights have come so far from what they used to be and now Homosexuality in America is not as taboo as it was lets say about 20 years ago lolz. Yes in the Black community it is frowned upon a bit but seriously is there any community in which it is not frowned upon. Oh yeah I am a new member Btw I really like this thread as well at first I thought it was going to go sour but it hasn't and I am satisfied with that....

I grew up in Western Monmouth County. Exit 98 off the Parkway and 7A off the Turnpike. I have also lived in Deptford and Lawrenceville, NJ briefly.
