Aww. hehe.

I think Serbia has joined the Schengen Visa zone (maybe also Croatia and Bosnia?) but I heard Kosovo hasn't been allowed to yet - any news on this?

Well, Croatia has joined the Schengen Visa zone long time ago, they are most civilised!
Bosnia and Kosovo have a lot if issues to take care of!
Kosovo is the sex trafficking and heroine epicenter of Europe!
And Bosnia, sadly, still has multicultural differences inherited for the last war :frown1:. And Serbs, Croats and Muslims that live in Bosnia are not helping things get better!!!
Jollster, Serbia, Montenegro and FYR Macedonia are joining Schengen Visa zone!

Ohhh, ok - cheers for the info Lukester. Croatia are pretty close to joining the EU now, aren't they? I know they could join as early as 2011, but didn't realise they were in the Schengen visa zone yet.

Hmm - sex trafficking and heroin, eh? Well, Kosovo sounds like your kinda place, dude! :biggrin1:

Wow, that's almost the same as it would be in Russian: "Говоришь ли наш язык?" (though probably "ли" would be omitted).

I also know how to say "Fuck your soul!" in Serbo-Croatian (I learned it from The Good Soldier Švejk).

Russian is actually very similar to Serbocroatian so I'm not surprised. When Russian people have spoken to me in Russian in the past I have always known, at least roughly, what they were talking about. Then again that's to be expected as at one point it used to be the same language.

BTW do you speak Russian?

Which newly autonomous Balkan 'nation,' then, do you think, would be most ripe, economically speaking (or most rife with desperate-for-work 'talent'), for someone like George Duroy to swoop in and establish a gay porn industry, as he did in Bratislava after the so-called 'Velvet Revolution' precipitated the break-up of Czechoslovakia?

I'm not into gay porn (as I'm not gay lol) so I don't know much about this, but I would say Slovenia. All the other countries have people with too homophobic mentalities for it to work. For example, the first ever Serbian gay pride parade has been cancelled yet again this eyar (3rd or 4th year in a row) because the homophobic attitutes displayed by the population and the homophobic graffiti that appeared everywhere in days leading up to it persuaded the organisers to call the whole thing off.

I would not say that I speak Russian. I spent some time trying to learn the language; I can understand a little (if I have time to think about what I hear or read), and I can put some sentences together, but that's about it. A Serbian friend of mine (in the US) who knows a lot of Russians and used to be married to one says that she can understand spoken Russian though she has never studied the language and can't speak it. But Russian and Serbo-Croatian (or the languages that used to be grouped under that term ) are attributed to different language families: Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarussian are East Slavic; Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, and I think Slovene are South Slavic; so I was a little surprised to see that sentence come out as close to Russian as it did. It was almost an exact transliteration from the Russian Cyrillic to the Roman alphabet. But I imagine that someone who knew the two languages well could put together a whole series of sentences that would work in either one. Someone once did this for Latin and Italian in a poem of about a dozen lines that reads correctly in either language! (It's in Mario Pei's The Story of Language.)

Nah, it was cancelled for the second time...
But we have laws now that protect gays....
As my friend said to me- U ARE BETTER PROTECTED THAN POLLAR BEARS, lol!
Almost all people because of whom the parade was cancelled are arrested now.

Oh ok I see  Like your Serbian friend I can more or less understand Russian even though I havn't studied it or spoken it.

You're right about the different language groups, but the differences between the East/South/West Slavic groups aren't that big and they're really all just "Slavic" languages. So the differences between Serbocroatian and Russian are much smaller then differences between English and German, even though both respective pairs of languages are in the same language group.

Oh by the way Slovenian is a bit of an odd one, it's classed as a Southern Slavic language but it's heavily influenced by the Western Slavic languages and in some ways it is more similar to Czech and Slovakian then it is to Serbocroatian. H
Here's a song in Slovenian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2YaT3L2jqY
And the exact same song in Serbocroatian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67L3aERzt4Y&feature=related
As you can tell they sound very different indeed.

Yes but even so I find society down there to be a LOT more homophobic then society in the UK. In B & H and Croatia there are laws to protect gay people too....but even so people's attitude to them is just disgusting, when I hear some of the hate that comes out of people's mouthes about gays and lesbians it actually makes me feel physically sick, and I've never heard people here talk with so much hate about gays and lesbians.

Like when I was in Brela (Croatia) this year, I met a very charming and clever Dalmatian woman who was telling me all sorts of interesting things, then she suddenly came out with "But one thing I cannot understand is where all the gay fuckers have come out of in this country. Where were they before? It's a disgusting disease and they're infecting everyone with it, if you ask me they should all be rounded up and shot. Dirty, disgusting little creatures."

When I heard that it just made me want to crawl away somewhere and not come out. :( But worse, I've met many people who have said similar and she wasn't the first or last person whom I heard say something that hateful about gays and lesbians.

Do they have lots of fags in B&H?

It is very Unpopular theme here in Bosnia & Herzegowina. Here is "old-fashioned" society. And we can not talk about this in public. It is very strange to be homo,gay,fag.....etc. Everybody need to hide their sexuality.

From The Best of British: The American's guide to speaking British:
Fag - Probably the most famous troublesome word for Brits in the USA. I even fell for it myself when I visited my first US supermarket aged 16 and asked how much the fags were. The lady gave me a horrible stare and pretended not to hear me. Little did she know I thought I had found a business opportunity to make money on cigarettes. Fags are expensive here!
