Ask a trainer

Hi to all,

I'm a certified personal trainer and I have a degree in health and fitness . If anyone has any health and fitness related questions, hit me up!! I'm happy to help
Do you ever recommend long hot sex for people to use to de-stress? What's the maximum heart rate you've ever reached during sex?

Probably a question that a lot of guys in their 40's and 50's, (especially if they have past injuries to consider), myself included, is, how to get back into a gym routine, when it is kind of depressing. The gyms have become so much about competing. I hope to rejoin the YMCA, but in the meantime, any advice about getting started with an at home exercise program?

I know to go slow, and don't over-do it, and eat well... But, it is the discipline part that is my downfall, without a partner or trainer. I have a small set of barbells, and I'm thinking about buying a stationary bike or some other equipment, like a rowing machine.

Action Buddy -- Go to the gym for YOU. Use it as a place where you can be around others without being forced to interact -- unless you want to. Too many people forget that the best kind of workout is the one that refreshes you...so, don't go with the idea that you have to kill yourself. Do the workout that feels good for and to you. You'll be happier and healthier for it.

I have tended to be very unimpressed with most personal trainers as I watch them train their clients. A big rip off most of the time. They don't push them hard enough.

I tend to agree with this..
Also, it seems like they are just reading off a checklist that's supposed to work for everybody, instead of tailoring the training to fit the client.
I used to work at a gym & health food store.
The whole time I was there,I found ONE who actually knew what he was doing.

I disagree about personal trainers; mine is excellent overall.

He pushes me very hard and I'm a difficult case; five years of recovery from spinal injury and associated brain injury which affects perception and coordination.

But I look better at nearly 50 than I ever have before.

I agree that a lot of trainers are just rep counters. That's why I took the time to get an education over a just getting a weekend certification. There is no "one size fits all"training. Everyone is different. We all have different needs and abilities. It's called "Personal" training for a reason.

Thank you for not taking my comment personally. It wasn't intended that way.

For someone with a mild back injury; other than planking, pilates & yoga, what is a good exercise for core strengthening without doing any harsh exercises?

I would try reverse crunches , hanging knee raises, leg raises, bicycle crunches, alternate heel touches, dead bugs and bird dogs.

Ok..the dead bug & bird dog seem like great exercises to incorporate into my routine. Thanks!

Hello Flexxx, persoal training is not about making people sweat. Otherwise trainers would force their clients to an hour of burpess. Would that be a good investment on the client's part? People don't need a trainer to sweat. If the trainer knows what he is doing, he will test clients for muscle imbalances, address them, and help them work towards their goals. Sweat will probably follow, but it is not the focus.

I've got decent abs, shallow 6-pack. Have been trying to get bottom ab plate to "pop" out better, but not making much progress. Have been hitting it from all angles, but no noticeable results. I'm afraid it may be genetic, but any suggestions on how to get thickness and protrusion of that lowest ab plate?

What's your opinion on weights. is it more important to go with a fixed amount of reps for that day on a particular exercise or continue with the weight you had done in previous days knowing you are going to hit less reps for whatever reason. For example, doing incline bench, I usually try to hit 12-15 reps with a particular weight. but today I just feel that to hit 12-15 i have to lower the weight. Should i continue with my the same weight with less reps or lower the weight to hit my rep goal. I'm trying to build muscle bulk.

I need to take a 2 month break from the gym, for work reasons really ... have too much work on, and it's not worth the fees if I can't get there say two or three times a week ( I had been doing 4 or 5 ) ...

So, when I go back, what should I look out for? And, will doing pushups etc. help me in the meantime?
