So I'm thinking about laser hair removal and want to know more about others experience? Is it painful? does it really work?wich ipl do you use?
Mrs. Squirrel did my back last year with some sort of laser devise she bought for herself. You have to shave first. Then you run the device over the skin. There is a faint smell of burnt hair sometimes. Couldn’t really feel much of anything. Only did it the once. If it permanently removed any hair, it was probably less than 5%. You would have to religiously do it for many months, I’m sure. Apparently it does not work on blond or really light coloured hair.

I tried the first TRIA (laser) and the first Silk'N (IPL). Those first models didn't even have clever names!

TRIA was fairly painful when the laser was on, like a searing burn, but the pain didn't linger. Unfortunately it only covered a very tiny spot at a time, much smaller than a US dime.

Silk'N had a flash lamp that had to be replaced after 750 flashes. It could hit a fairly large area compared to the TRIA unit. Its cooling fan was very loud, like a hair dryer -- too loud to watch television or carry a normal conversation. It took annoyingly-long to recharge between flashes. (Flash. Wait. Wait-wait. Wait. Flash.)

Both units yielded a decent reduction in hair, but neither was completely effective.

Last year I bought a Braun Silk Expert Pro 5, and I splurged on the top model because it had the fastest recharge time. (The less expensive Pro 3 takes about twice as long.) It's quiet enough that it won't disturb anyone. Treated hairs fall out in about a week. A few straggly hairs came back, but treated areas are mostly clear after a few months. Suggestion: choose the fastest model if you can afford it.

Because it only affects actively growing hairs you will need to repeat the treatments no matter how you get it done, even at a salon. Even electrolysis has to be repeated a few months apart in order to reach each follicle during its active-growth cycle.

Hi!
I work in dermatology and I just want to mention a few things since we deal with a lot of laser hair as well.

While there are many out there it’s always best to go to someone who has a license to own and operate something like that. Ones of high degree and ones of lower degree all are out there but you get what you pay for.

Cynosure or Immode make very good lasers that have melanin readers to make sure the laser isn’t going to be at a level where it would ruin the pigment of your skin.

Although it should be taken serious when you pick which lasers are best for you, try going on Groupon. A lot of smaller doctor offices will have specials and promos on there or some type of similar website/social media and they can perform the job for a fraction of the cost but with the same machine and same outcomes.

Also, it will take more than one visit depending on the area, color of hair, and thickness. Don’t be surprised if it takes up to 12 treatments to get the full results. It can be time consuming but some people only need 3-5 visits to get the results they like.

due to the laser being attracted to pigment if the area you wanted treated has hair more on the lightly brown/blonde side it probably won’t benefit much from the laser and you should save your money.

Sorry I should add, after one treatment you have to wait a few weeks sometimes up to two months before you can be treated again due to hair growth cycles. Although the hair may fall out after a week or two the new cycle of growth has to come into the follicle.

Prior to the appointment or use of laser about 1 week or so, do not wax or use hair removal cream and or any type of skin care products that have active ingredients such as tretinoin in it - active ingredients like that such as salicylic acids or glycolic acid which is in a lot of skincare anti aging/acne products would also need to be stopped. It makes the skin very sensitive and the laser will for sure damage the skin you want treated to where it may not be able to be fixed.

Pain, typically feels like being snapped by a rubber band. Al though some places will let you use
Numbing cream but a lot of people don’t recommend it because the laser is light based and cream or any other obstacles may limit the success of each passing of the laser on the skin.
