This is a lot for me to unpack.
Around 5 pm Tuesday, March 16, a man goes into three spas in the greater Atlanta area and starts shooting.
Six women, four of whom have been identified, have died. Two men have died as well.
The British Broadcasting Corp says four of the dead have been identified and South Korean officials are assisting on identifying the remaining women of Korean descent.
Here’s the BBC list of the known dead
Ashley Yaun, 33
Paul Andre Michels, 54
Xiaojie Tan, 49
Daoyou Feng, 44
Known injured
Elcias R Hernandez-Ortiz, no age given.
Daily Beast, in a choppy article with three writers and one tired editor, reports the ethnic breakdown of all victims, and how it unfolded this way:
The rampage began at Young’s Asian Massage in Acworth in Cherokee County, where two people were killed, one other person succumbed to their injuries en route to a nearby hospital, and one died while in treatment, according to the sheriff’s office. The victims were two Asian women, a white woman, and a white man, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. A Hispanic man was also injured in the shooting and was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment, a spokesman for the sheriff said.
About an hour later and 30 miles away, two spas on the same Atlanta street—Gold Spa and one in Aroma Therapy Spa—were targeted by gunfire, and four Asian women were killed.
As always, in the days after something like this, people want to know the motive.
The shooter, a 21-year-old white man, is in jail.
His booking photo shows him in a green bullet proof vest.
The man is the son of a youth pastor. Father and son hunted. He has admitted he has a sex addiction and saw the massage parlors as spaces of temptation.
Atlanta shootings: Suspect charged with murder as victims identified
Massage Parlor Massacres Suspect Said He Loved Guns & God
So, we have a young guy with an inability to control urges he hears as sinful, taking a gun and ammo into places where women perform “unlicensed touch”, or massage that isn’t massage therapy (statistically, women in these places don’t have control over their movement and/or the money they earn. It’s sex work and often highly exploitive and holding women so they cannot earn in any other way. Slavery and prostitution.)
We also have a white guy going in and killing women of mainly Asian descent.
While attacks on Asians are rising because people are stupid and scared babies who’d rather kill that wear a mask or get a vaccine because they think Bill Gates/George Soros/pick a boogeyman made into a slur is out to get them.
We don’t know this young man’s motivation. We know he’s talked to investigators about his sex addiction.
I saw a white officer at a press conference trying to solidly move the crime away from race.
Here is a thought, these women were killed because they were women.
The shooter couldn’t control his little buddy, so he applied an American Burqua... elimination of the feminine because men can’t control themselves.
The women in the situation were overwhelmingly Asian (multiple countries are involved, so I’m not saying Korean across the board) because women are trafficked into or pressured into working in these locations. Because average Americans see Asian women in one of three ways: shy and submissive, Dragon Lady or engineer.
Because Americans are woefully short on imagination when it comes to women and people from Asia.
As we add this to the list of horrors perpetuated on people from Asian nations, let’s remember that this particular shooting wasn’t about a pandemic of a virus, but a pandemic of male failure.
