This always seems to be a contentious issue and it's been debated here several times.
The African research has too many confounding variables to satisfy my need for scientific rigor to allow us to transfer the results transculturally. For example, it could be that daily washing of the glans and preputial mucosal epidermis would decrease HIV transmission to a similar extent to circumcision. We do not know from the research studies whether any account was taken of frequency of penile hygiene.
Even if there were a clear argument for circumcision on HIV transmission grounds, the circumcision could be chosen by adolescents for themselves. It would not require neonatal circumcision. I am against doctors and parents choosing circumcision for newborn babies, except for direct medical reasons or religious/cultural conventions (but even in this latter I would prefer a young man to choose for himself to be circumcised and be part of the religious/cultural norm).

    Not anymore.

Those under 20-25 tend not to be circumcised and those older are. The younger the person the more chance he is intact. More recently the routine male infant circumcision is banned from public hospitals (South Australia was the last state to institute the ban -- 2007).

The african studies are conclusive enough. It isn't just the statistics, but also the medical study into the foreksin cells which showed them to be HIV receptors for uncircumcised males.

What is not known is how long it takes for the circumcisied inner foreksin to gain its resistance against HIV. So an earlier circumcision would help ensure the inner foreksin gains its resistance before the male becomes sexually active.

Circumcision at a later time might require removal of inner foreksin to ensure the HIV reduction is achieved (depending on how long it takes for inner foreksin to gain resistance)

Why is the US the world's HIV+ leader?

Are you telling me that it's ok to fuck without protection if you're circumcised? I'd say that using a rubber is a much better option than cutting some skin of a penis and have a slightly reduced statistical chance of getting HIV.

I forget the exact figure but even if the Africa studies are correct, it would take more than 1500 circumcisions in Australia to prevent one HIV transmission. That's an awful lot of surgeon-hours that could be spent saving many more lives more directly.

@SirConcis, the claims about the foreskin and HIV are based on wild speculation and in vitro (glassware) studies.

Thankfully most young Aussie guys have a choice these days.

Attitudes have changed a lot in a generation. Now it's the cut boys who feel like the odd ones out.

Good to hear high profile guys like Dave Hughes discussing their status on national TV.

Hope there's NOT a return to routine circ in Australia.

Everyone should have choice. No conclusive study proves there is a benefit to circumsion. Any body have studies to post here? (not a newspaper/media article please).

One of my best mates has just found out he's expecting a son.

I've told him most Aussie boys are left intact these days, but he wants him cut to "match" Daddy.

Any suggestions on convincing him not to circumcise? I fear it's a lost cause.

ask him why he would want to subject his son to surgery he doesn't need, to satisfy his vanity. ask him why he would want to remove half the skin, and 20,000 nerves from his son. tell him that the foreskin and head are fused at birth, and that they are separated by a process which the medical community calls 'blunt trauma'.
this is horribly painful, and can damage the head.
you, and he, should read this:
    The Vulnerability of Men

best of luck with your friend.

Google "Doctors Opposing Circumcision" - halfway down the page there is a link to a video slide show called "The Prepuce". Send him the link. (Can't post it here since it breaks the rules). The video very clearly explains the anatomy and physiology of the foreskin. Anyone that watches and understands should be easily convinced that circumcision is wrong. I have successfully convinced people not to circumcise using this video.

Thanks for your support guys and the links etc.

My mate is now seriously re-considering whether to get his son done.

He's still not certain what to do, but he was so adamant before... so it's a step in the right direction

The little fella might thank us all one day!
