Storm surges are going to be a major factor in this cyclone because it's due to cross the coastline on a high tide.

My thoughts are with everyone there. I was recently in Sydney and was considering a trip to Cairns and was discouraged because of the issues even before this was part of the story.

There must be a glitch because the link you provided was about the issues in Egypt. The tag line however ironic could be used for both issues.... "Get out now. Don't bother to pack your bags. Just gather your family and leave."

The Yasi stuff starts about halfway through the video.

as the cyclone approaches and on top of that you will have huge waves because the swell is so big," he said.

“During the evening, the very destructive core of Cyclone Yasi will cross the coast between Cairns and Ingham, accompanied by a dangerous storm tide south of the cyclone centre.”

Don't panic if roof lifts off: authorities

Jessica Marszalek 12:57pm People bunkering down at home for the onslaught of Cyclone Yasi should prepare a safe room and not panic if their roof lifts off, authorities

apologies to those who suffer on a regular basis in places like Kansas etc with Tornados whatever , but this is a Queensland thread and a hell of a huge deal,

My heart goes out too all of you down under. Hope and pray that things settle down and everyone can clean up and get back to normal.

Thought this could be of interest

How the Yasi weather pattern would appear were it tracking over the United States of America.

Wow! That makes it look bigger than it does on the Aussie maps!

The whole thing is scary.

Dragon, obviously you aren't gonna be reading this tonight, but I'm thinking of you. Stay safe.

Seems a bit unfortunate to be hit by a huge cyclone immediately after the floods. :( Is it caused by the same weather conditions, ie: the ocean warmer than usual?

Good luck to everyone there. :S

After crossing the coast as a Category 5 cyclone, the Bureau of Meteorology downgraded Yasi to Category 4 at 3am.

Yasi was estimated to be 140 kilometres south southwest of Cairns and 95 kilometres southwest of Innisfail and moving west southwest at 33 kilometres per hour

"We are talking about a pretty strong brick house that was built in the 70s, so god help us in the morning when we look at some of the older places," he said.

Mr Sorbello ventured outside briefly during the eye of the storm to assess the damage and said the streets were strewn with debris while power poles had been knocked over.

"It is just a scene of mass devastation," he said.

"(Cyclone) Larry was a boy compared to this."

4.46am

International media is trying to paint a picture of what residents in Yasi's destructive path might have experienced last night.

The BBC has chosen Cairns-based Scotsman Steven Smith's comparisons to a 'Jumbo jet' while CBS says even "Seasoned Aussies" were made to feel nervous during the "Humongous Storm".

Cycloned out, but intrigued at Mankinds natural resilience to Natures Wrath
First Light is comming up
entire bannana plantation totally flattened, 90% of Aus suppplied from the area
