4th street is where most of the gay bars are, but it’s Austin, so unlike Houston or Dallas, there’s no need for a “gay neighborhoods”. Honestly, as long as you stay off dirty 6th, you’ll more than likely have a good mix of folks wherever you end up. Nobody really cares nowadays. It’s kind of a free for all. Go with what makes you happy. Personally, I hang out on Red River. It’s a good diverse mix of people and things to do. Barbarella has a good dance floor and a different theme every night while connected to Swan Dive, through the largest back patio in the city, which usually has live bands or the occasional karaoke. You’ll not find a more packed bar on a Tuesday night. Sidebar is a dark and dirty dive that feels like you’re in someone’s backyard in the middle of the city. Strongest pour for the cheapest price. You’ll thank me....or throw up. Empire Control Room has great weekly parties, as well as some kick ass bands roll through. Elysium, by far, has the best dance floor if you’re over 30, with great theme nights, occasional drag shows, old school goth and industrial bands performing, etc. It is a true mix of folks there, with the nicest and most genuine owner I’ve ever met, no shit. They’re the sort of granddaddy of Red River. Established and been there forever. Not to be missed is Cheer Up Charlie’s, a lesbian-owned, community minded, mostly outdoor bar. Live bands, great semi-regular parties, very chill, super 420 friendly. Try a golden ticket if you go. Hope that helps.
