I have met several "black" men from the Carribean, Central or South America or other areas who do not identify themselves as "African Americans". Many of them speak Spanish as their first lanquage. There dress, eating, music, are often "Latino", and they do not consider themselves to be members of the African American "community" or sub-culture.
I am not sure why this is surprizing, not all Americans with white skin identify themselves as being part of the same cultural group, either.
