My techno library is full of artists that most people have never heard of, atleast in the US, but are very popular overseas in Europe. And there are some techno artists that were popular in the US back in the 90's but have now long since been forgotten. Does anyone remember a song called Coco Jambo by Mr. President? It was a big hit all over the world at one point, but now it seems that nobody in the US remembers it.
If you mean "techno" as in the actual genre and not a catch all for every form of EDM, you should try me. I am definitely a minimal tech kinda girl.

Probably my favorite "nobody has ever heard of them but me" band is Hugo Largo, a minimalist group, which I believe began as an experiment in writing songs for two bass guitars. That didn't quite work, so they added a violin, which gave the shape of the sound definition and added a touch of color.

I'm surprised that I was able to find a couple of their songs on YouTube. Unfortunately, I'm not terribly impressed by the quality of these live performances. I think the versions of the songs they recorded on their albums are much more beautiful.

YouTube - Hugo Largo - Scream Tall (1, live 1988)
YouTube - Hugo Largo - Fancy (4, live 1988)

I think this song by Soul Coughing is genius:
YouTube - Soul Coughing - Screenwriter's Blues

Other bands that come to mind are:

Single Gun Theory
YouTube - From A Million Miles

Shelleyan Orphan
YouTube - Shelleyan Orphan - Dead Cat / Burst

oh man I love Patton, but he can be somewhat of a dick, kinda like Mustaine, but Dave's more abrasive I think, although I love him too.

King Crimson is amazing, they were so ahead of their time is not funny, they should be household names, 10 minute free form improvs between songs be dammed, Red and 21st Century Schizoid Man are two of my favourite songs ever, incredible that they were put out in 74 and 69 respectively.

Legendary Pink Dots
Gun Club
Clemente
Centro-matic
The Gourds

I've heard Legendary Pink Dots before, and maybe Gun Club (name sounds familiar)

The Smiths are one of my all-time favorites!

More bands I like that most people haven't heard of:

The Hidden Cameras
YouTube - The Hidden Cameras - Death of a Tune

Of Montreal
YouTube - Of Montreal - Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games

The Orion Experience
YouTube - The Orion Experience "Queen of White Lies"

Neutral Milk Hotel
YouTube - King Of Carrot Flowers

And some bands from the 80s and 90s...

Connells
YouTube - The Connells - Over There
YouTube - The Connells - Seven

Cavedogs
YouTube - "Leave Me Alone" by the Cavedogs

Inspiral Carpets
YouTube - Inspiral Carpets - She Comes In The Fall

Darling Buds
YouTube - The Darling Buds - Let's Go Round There

Cast
YouTube - Cast - Alright

And I can't believe I found this on YouTube!

Ilgi
YouTube - I??I - S?ju v?ju

and...

Yat-Kha
YouTube - Yat-Kha - Amdy Baryp
YouTube - Yat-Kha - Black Magic Woman (and yes, this is a cover of Santana's song - in Tuvan, with throat singing!)

I like a LOT of world music that most people haven't heard of, but I mostly concentrated on my indie rock here, except for Ilgi and Yat-Kha...

Wow... in going through this thread and clicking on the youtube linx along with typing some bands in the youtube search engine (for those who couldn't be bothered to provide links to videos or live performances)... I can honestly tell some of you that you have real shit tastes in music. lol!!!! :chairfall:

Many of these bands are unknown because they suck.

the indie rock gods, built to spill. they've been around for ages but not many people know who they are.

umm... oh yeah saves the day. another indie/kind of emo band that started about 10 yrs ago. they went through a wide series of phases and lots of band members.

oh and i absolutely love duffy. however, none of my friends have a clue who she is. she's huge in europe, of course, but doesn't get a lot of radio-play in the states.

some other bands i like that not many people have heard of are: ted leo and the pharmacists, the early november, and finding westerly (although they broke up).

a ted leo link on a youtube thing (just the song though).
