It's an odd thing to call someone I'd agree, but...

Racial slur as man calls Welsh woman "English" - Yahoo! News UK

Posing a question to those across the pond; were a Californian (perhaps from the route 66 era) to call someone from Oklahoma a 'dumb Okie' would that constitute a criminal offence or would it considered merely an outdated perjorative term?

In a broader context; where should name calling end, and criminality begin?

Purely perjorative. It's not a racial slur unless it relates to skin colour.

If anyone should go to jail it's the "Welsh Bitch". The offensive thing is to be offended by being called wrong nationality.

I guess they don't have freedom of speech over there.

It's almost as bad as jailing someone for naming a Teddy Bear Mohamed.

By the way I call him Poofter the Magic Dragon.

:biggrin1: Ah, I just have to be a bit pedantic here, but this is the 5th time I've seen this particular misspelling...

If "perjorative" were actually a real word, it would most likely mean "in a deceitful manner; lying."

I think the word you are actually looking for is "pejorative"... if the intent is "derogatory" or "derisive."

I thought so but I thought I'd punt it out there.

MB, I'm not sure I agree that 'race' (as we know - a made up term) is contingent of skin colour though I'd agree it can be a component. But if it were, since when is English (or Welsh) a skin colour?

This whole thing is so much twaddle. And people wonder why there is so much hatred and divisivness in the world.

That's what I asked myself. A caucasian northerner could call a white southerner a "cracker". Are they being racist? Maybe we should label those as "regionalists" or some such term.

People show their ignorance in many ways, this is only one of them.

I believe it would be an ethnic slur, were "race" not involved.

No opinion, no matter how thoughtless or "offensive," should be criminal.

How many adults would do well to remember the old "stcks and stones" childrens ryhme...

This is entirely stupid. Where I'm from in Chicago I've been called a dumb WOP, Deigo, Pollack, and even "Fucking Jew."

I can't even count the times I've been called a Faggot or Queer.

People just need to get over themselves.

Would it have been better had he called her a Welsh Bitch?

I mean come on... This is senseless litigation and we all know it. Well, maybe we all know it, apparently the Welsh legal system and the "English Bitch" don't agree.
