Bea Arthur leaves $300K to gay youth - CNN.com

In her will she left behind $300,000 to a place that houses gay youth that have been kicked out or run away. In the recent recession the donations have slowed and this is a huge boost for the place. I always loved her as an actress, a trailblazer at times, and the only well known name I can think of to give some big bucks to the organization (or like organizations).

    Way to go Bea!

A lovely and considerate act. I wish we could all do so much.

Thanks for posting this. We need to hear more news like this within the gay community. Recently there have been a spate of homophobic attacks here in the UK, one of which took a life. Some people seem to believe that homophobia no longer exists....it does.

It's a wonderful posthumous gesture from the lady. Thankyou Bea.

(Stupid question here? Was Bea Arthur gay?).

I was so bloody sick of those Bea Arthur jokes while she was alive. You know the sort; "she's a transexual", "she's really a man".

From Maude to The Golden Girls (to say nothing of her contribution to Broadway) Miss Arthur was the real deal.

    Thanks Bea.

If I were a praying man I'd say "dear God? May we have Betty White around for a while yet"? I loved me some Bea Arthur and I love me some Betty White. Nothin' like a with it old broad!

Despite rumors to the contrary I suspect she was.

Won't it be nice one day when those in the public eye can be as honest as the rest of the damned fools in the world?

I can't think of a more worthy charity.

She clearly had a social relevance that went unnoticed. I doubt that most women her age were even aware that this problem exists, let alone a social problem.

When I watched the Pamela Anderson roast, I kinda felt sorry for her. Everyone made fun of her 'penis' and it was very smutty. But when I saw Bea Arthur take the mic, I realized that she could not only handle it, but give it all back in spades.

I have said this before but it is worth reapting I think. Yeas ago my students and I were putting on Sweet Charity. Just as the character of Charity gets a movie star's picture and autograph...we thought it would be fun to do the lobby this way for the show. We sent letters out to celebs asking for an autographed picture...I was working too many hours then to think this through. Of course you have to send the celeb their own photo with a return stamped envelope...we neglected to do this so we only got one photo. It was from Bea Arthur. She must have taken pity on us. LOL. But I thought that was so sweet. We had it in the theatre office forever. I think she was a good gal through and through. Saw her one woman stage show...really enjoyed it. What a great thing to leave money this way for such a good cause. God bless her. She will always be one of my faves.

Doesn't surprise me, she was a very classy lady. She was well aware of the gay rumors, she credited it to her deep voice and dominating persona, as if that makes a woman gay.

Saw this on CNN mobile yesterday while waiting at in the doctors office.

I think that is so cool that she remembered them in her will. GLBT youth are an important yet often overlooked part of society that need support and encouragement.
