More about Perla. My husband, sister, and I had the wonderful experience of seeing her perform in mid-September at Chico Worldfest (world music festival). It was warm and gorgeous weather and it was an outdoor venue. I expected her to be good and was totally smitten by how warm and engaging she was. For example, in an early number, people got up and danced. Among them were two high-school aged boys. At the end of the song she signaled to them and said: "My daughter's friends are your age and, let me tell you, NONE of them are cool enough to do what you just did." Whether they were gay kids, I do not know. But her statement was clearly supportive and anti-homophobic. Later, she performed LC's "Hallelujah" and got a bunch of 5-8 year old kids from the audience to come on stage and sing the chorus with her. You know they will fondly remember this the rest of their lives.
It was a beautiful afternoon.

I'm going to break this up into 4 categories to keep things fair...

In your opinion, who is the:

Best Rock/"Pop" music singer male or female?

Best Broadway-style singer male or female?

Best Opera singer male or female?

Best (miscellaneous) singer male or female?

Feel free to offer youtube links to back up your claims.

As usual for any category involving music, I can't narrow it down to just one! But this topic is a prime topic for me to wax poetic about what I refer to as "That Voice" (yes, with the capital letters to begin the words!)

And here they are!

Rock/Pop:

Bryan Ferry

Chris Isaak
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oaHHrNQVrg

Chris DeBurgh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejxFeS47OZ8

Al Stewart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM7LR46zrQU

Nico
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjjDmX9Tkss

Mary Fahl (lead singer of October Project)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMBEk4RNXpQ

Paula Frazer (could also count under "Country")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWm_YTVb0Z0

Broadway... (you're going to be immediately able to tell from this that I am a HUGE fan of the original cast recording of "Phantom of the Opera"!)

Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5dhyiqhR7Y

Opera ... not as familiar with, but I like Andrea Bocelli
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7NAp247wOM&feature=fvw

Miscellaneous... Get ready for LOTS of entries here - I'm a world music fan!

Urna!!!!!!!! Mongolian singer who recordings, while good, don't do her justice! I saw her live once and was actually moved to tears just from the beauty of her voice! That had NEVER happened before! (or since!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbfszHbEByk

Loreena McKennitt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qQHlWkSM_o

Syrah (lead singer of Qntal)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TnV-Kj_32Y

Habib Koite (you KNOW I have to mention Habib Koite here! And I've seen him live as well - 3 times, in fact!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4VRGALZdBA&feature=related

Samite (Ugandan singer, who I've also seen live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdwHegyWtwQ&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOgt5FHxN5U

Mari Boine (she's since dropped the "Persen" from her name) - I've seen her live as well!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxXzcF4zMvk

And an additional category...

Country (two very well-known singers, and one less well-known...)

Patsy Cline
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmLS_jkxPRs&feature=related

Dolly Parton
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1zJzr-kWsI

Iris DeMent (who I've also seen live!)

My knowledge is too limited for me to offer much here, even tough I love sung music.....

Even so, you win this thread. This is incredible. Its also timely. We just saw LC in concert with the Webb sisters. It was a truly religious experience. How does a guy in his 80s still manage to hypnotize one with his poetry/music.

"Best" singer. Hmmmm.... That's broad. Does it mean most pleasing vocal timbre? Widest range? Most adept at hitting notes spot on? Best phrasing?
For example, I think both John Lennon and Frank Sinatra had great soul and phrasing...tho neither had a really amazing voice per se.

That said - some other favourites (for various reasons):

Best Rock/"Pop" music singer male or female?
Freddie Mercury
Karen Carpenter
Grace Slick
Paul McCartney
Chuck Negron
Rod Stewart
Stevie Wonder
Joe Cocker
Cass Elliot
Donna Summer

Best Broadway-style singer male or female?
Ethel Merman
Sammy Davis Jr.
Liza Minnelli
John Barrowman
Patrick Wilson
Julie Andrews

Best Opera singer male or female?
Not an opera lover (sorry)

Best (miscellaneous) singer male or female?
Mel Torme
Shirley Bassey
Barbra Streisand
Patti LaBelle
Dean Martin
Art Garfunkel
Marilyn McCoo
Roberta Flack

I'm so envious. Thanks for the comment. Both of them are great but I am totally smitten with Perla, and I usually prefer male singers.
