I remember for Xmas when I was 5, I got my first CD player and 2 CDs. The two CDs I got were a collection of Disney songs and The Who's Tommy. I don't think I ever listened to that Disney CD. Naturally, I didn't "get" a lot of Tommy (especially some of the stranger songs, such as "Acid Queen"), but I still enjoyed (and still do enjoy) the hell out of that album. (Or maybe I was just weird as a kid.)
/tangent

I don't think kids are really that picky at a young age, and as long as it's nothing that requires an extreme amount of concentration, I'd wager they'd like it. Odds are good you could just give/play them anything you like that isn't overly complicated, and they'll enjoy it.

Our daughter growing up always enjoyed Lois, Sharon, and Brahm. Good kids songs and educational.

If you want to go country our daughter enjoyed Dolly Parton. (I think the albumn she liked was "Love is Like a Butterfly) In fact we had to make a trip to Dollyland instead of Disney.

Awesome sauce! I need to listen to the rest of these! Thank you all so much!

My son was screaming and inconsolable. As a last resort move, I looked up Good Vibrations on Youtube and played it. I thought, at least it'll be ironically funny if it doesn't help. He stopped crying! It worked! TheBF said it was weird.

I actually tried Metallica within the hour after Seaside mentioned it! It didn't work. My baby seems to like a lot of harmonizing in his music and less jangliness.

I tried Good Vibrations a second time and it didn't work. I think it worked the first time because he had never heard the song before. I think the novelty of a new song is what makes him curious and interested enough to stop crying and screaming.

"Enter Sandman" would be a GREAT lullaby!

LOL! Seriously, I tried it! Anything to make him stop crying!

I think my boy would like Queen more. :biggrin1:

He's obviously a cat, rather than a rabbit then! (Thinking about it, he might even be human!).

Good grief! Good Vibrations worked a second time! He loves it!

There may still be something in the novelty idea though. You should start rotating Beach Boys songs so he doesn't get bored.

Oh, I've been trying every single Beach Boys song! And I think he likes Elton John, too. He does not like Liza Minelli, Metallica, or Jesus and Mary Chain, which I tried thinking that it might work the same way that the blowdryer and vacuum works.

I think I must not have played Good Vibrations long enough that time it didn't work and I tried a different song too soon. It's like magic! Fascinating to watch him calm down to the music. It actually worked a third time last night, and I used it again a fourth time just this morning when I was changing him to help calm him down after his diaper leaked while he was in the carrier and he was upset that he was all wet and cold and covered in his own pee and he was freaking out about it, but I thought it would get tedious if I kept updating this thread every single time the song Good Vibrations stopped him from crying.

I am only using it when he's really upset because I'm afraid that it will stop working, and then what will I do then? I haven't found another song that works so far. He seemed to like Wouldn't It Be Nice and it seemed to stop him from crying once when he was fussy, but that's nothing compared to Freak Out Mode, which is when he squeezes his eyes shut and screams and shakes his head back and forth and his face turns red and his whole body becomes tense and he's so full of rage and sadness that he kicks and writhes and throws his fists around. It's intense! He even scratches at his own face or he'll grab his own cheek and squeeze it or pull on an ear and leave red marks all over! He has scratches all over his face from getting upset and now we put super soft fuzzy infant socks over his hands to keep him from hurting himself.

What are the chances that the very first song that popped to mind when I was trying to calm him down would be the one that works the best? That's been blowing my mind for days now. I'm a skeptic by nature, but you have to admit, that's eerily insightful. And why haven't I been able to figure out another song that works?

He really seems to respond to vocal harmony, so I think maybe I should try Simon & Garfunkel, The Zombies, California Dreaming, Time of the Season... The problem is that none of those songs have the same upbeat sound and peaceful happy mood of Good Vibrations. Maybe XTC? Most of this isn't music I normally listen to, so I'm a bit out of my element. I don't listen to a lot of light and happy music, most of my music is complicated by at least a hint of darkness.

Kirsty MacColl - I know I suggested her already but you mentioned harmonies so I'm throwing my two cents in again. She's solo but she has a beautiful voice and is very talented - she did all her own harmonies. In fact, it was listening to Beach Boys records as a child that inspired a lot of her harmonies.

I'll try it right now. I was just visiting this thread looking for some music. He's quite upset!

I meant to respond to that, actually I've meant to respond to all of these, but I was going to say that I've heard her on Fairytale of New York, a song that I adore.

Oh, sorry, I thought I mentioned something about this earlier - our cats like higher pitched voices and softer music, the rabbit likes basey music with deep voices. So the rabbit likes Metallica (and others from his mummy's music collection), whilst the cats prefer 'other'. One cat particularly likes Dido (actually Dido could be one to try). Please don't be too annoyed with me comparing your baby to my pets .

Very cool! I would love to see it in action.

True. I'm also worried about YOU getting sick of it!

Try Wilson Phillips as well.

Oh, good suggestion! I'll try some of their songs.

Whew! It's all over. This one was caused by gas. His digestive system is still developing and it hurts when he has gas. He hates it. Baby farts are noisy but have no smell. It's weird.

He did stop crying when he heard Kirsty MacColl's voice on Days, but then he started crying again after a minute, but he was hurting and wasn't just upset this time.

I also thought of trying Mozart's Papageno-Papagena Duet. I played the Queen of the Night Aria for him just now while he was screaming, and he was screaming at the same time that she started going up and down the scales. It was hilarious, but it did not impress TheBaby enough to make him stop crying. At least it made it more bearable for me. I think mothers are programmed to feel intense stress when their babies cry.

Of course, I should have realized! I've only made it through partway through the first page of music. I'll go back through and read the whole thread instead of listening to the music along the way, too, which makes each post take a long time to get through!

Dido! I'll try her, too! I'm not surprised that he prefers clear vocals and music with high production values. His hearing just finished developing and his brain is still trying to figure out sounds. He'll get into noise rock later when he's better able to distinguish individual sounds, I'm sure of it.

I'm not annoyed! He keeps reminding me of my dog when he was just a puppy actually. I was sitting on the bed and he was napping next to me, and he kept snuggling up against my thigh and I thought, aw, that's just like... and I realized I was comparing him to my dog as a puppy! She was so small and adorable and had such big eyes like him and looked up at me in a similar way, and he's cuddly and buries his nose into my neck when I'm cuddling him and he even makes similar snuffling sounds and has similar rooting movements. I think that a lot of what we learned about how to care for him came from raising our puppy. We made up silly songs and sang them to our dog. Seriously! And now we do that with our baby. People kept teasing us that we were babying our dog. Well, I guess we did! Except a baby is about 50x more work, there are the same attitudes and protective feelings and similar responses and interactions, at least at this age.

Very cool! I would love to see it in action.
Oh! I should make a video of it! That would be cool! Now watch it not work when we have the camera pointed at him.

If I'm superstitious about anything, it's that trying to capture something on camera will jinx it.

True. I'm also worried about YOU getting sick of it!
Oh, it could never be worse than the crying. I'm convinced that the oxytocin that has bonded me to him has also made it impossible for my heart rate not to rise when I hear him sounding like he's in distress. It cuts right into me and makes me feel anxious to make it stop. I believe that response is a part of my biological drive as his mother and I'm programmed to respond like that, the same way that I'm programmed to lactate if I think he's hungry or if I think about him nursing, so that a stray thought will make my breasts start to leak. I don't think any song could be worse than his crying, at least to me!

There is a whole series of this music made by many popular Rock groups. Goggle -> Rock lullabies, Metal lullabies, etc....

Our baby doctor had us buy the full set of Baby Einsteins Cd's first and play them very very low on a CD player in the nursery that continuously repeated during the day or night while sleeping. He said it would help us grow calm children. It would also help them as they got older to ignore any type of noise while they slept. Trust me both children can now sleep through anything, thunderstorms that shake the house, hail storms, shopping in a store when they nap, and even on airplanes when we travel.

We found a bunch of the rock ones from different groups and then checked them out at the library to try them first then we purchased or copied the ones we loved. I have to say I enjoy the music also, which helps because most bay/toddler music today can grate on your mind and make any sane mom crazy.

Ours are now 4.5 and 5.5 years old and we still play the music every night from PM till they wake up. I have two children I can take anywhere, and we get compliments all the time from strangers that they never saw more behaved children. We got stopped constantly both trips in Disney World at expensive sit-down restaurants in the parks because our kids can sit for hours and behave better then most adults. Most ask how they can make their children/grandchildren better. I say it takes 24 hours a day of love, discipline and great music.

Also the best thing you did recently was get that software and scheduled yours and the baby's day. A baby on a etched in a stone schedule is a happy baby 24 hours a day. Ours both took naps right from birth at 10am and 2pm then went to bed every night at 7pm and did not wake up until 6am. I had to pump all my milk at night and bottle it for when they woke up. Man it saved our lives and marriage. It made better happy babies and us better happy parents! All my best wishes to your family!

Petite, your request has turned into a family activity here! Got my husband, daughter and Mum involved. So these are a mish-mosh of suggestions.

Mine are studied and tried with my daughter who turned out to be a music lover. My husband is a musician, so I don't know where his reasoning comes from. Mum wanted in with some of her favorites that she remembered, and my daughter, Pris, couldn't wait to share her first musical memories. I honestly didn't remember playing some of those for her, and I know I didn't play Sir Mix-A-Lot! Anyway, here's a list to wade through:

MINE:
Don't know much - Neville/Rondstat
Thing Called Love - Bonnie Rait
Born To Fly - Sara Evans
Where Do the Children Play - Cat Stevens
Imagine - John Lennon
Don't Know Why - Nora Jones
Crackerbox Palace - George Harrison
(Insert anything by George Strait here)
Sweet Baby James - James Taylor
Way Back Texas - Pat Green (good friend)
Georgia On My Mind - Willie Nelson
Beautiful Night - Paul McCartney
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You - James Taylor
You Are So Beautiful - Joe Cocker
Handel's Water Music Suite

CAP'S:
Respect - Aretha Franklin
Merry Christmas Baby - B.B. King (only BB he says)
Love - The Beatles (the whole album from start to finish as one song)
Life Is A Highway - Tom Cochrane
Bon Temps Rouler - Beausoleil
Anything from the Beatles Revolver or Sgt Pepper
Delbert McClinton Live From Austin album
Smooth - Santana
(Insert about 143 songs from Eric Clapton here)
Living in America - James Brown
Loves Me Like A Rock - Paul Simon
St. Judy's Comet - Paul Simon
I Love LA - Randy Newman
School of Rock - Soundtrack

MUM:
Bir Mir Bis Du Shein - Andrews Sisters
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy - Andrews Sisters
Sing Sing Sing - Benny Goodman

PRIS:
Suffragette City - David Bowie
Something About You - Level 42
Let it Whip - Dazz Band
Heart of Rock & Roll- Huey Lewis & The News
Our House - Madness
Gemini Dream - Moody Blues
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (prefers the video)
Jump On It - Sir Mix-A-Lot (???)
Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder
Rosanna - Toto (she thought that was her name for a while!)
End of the Line - Traveling Wilburys
