*A* Catholic Church.

Unless I missed it when they made Father Robert Morey the Pope.

Nit picky huh.

Hopefully this stand taken by the Father will be the first of many.

Don't count on it.......
How do you know? There is still a separation between church and state. A Catholic Priest has no political agenda. The Father did what he thought best for the his faith and the church. This could very well be the stand needed. Like it or not the story is spreading fast. I typed joe in the search engine and it was the first thing that popped up.

A priest very much has a political agenda. This is neither new nor a trend. Over the years different priests, bishops and other assorted pedophiles and misogynists have made these types of announcements / actions highlighting their lack of understanding of the Sacraments, and God's grace. It is not a surprise, of all the fake Christians on the planet, priests are among the worst.

I have great admiration for what the Catholic Church has done for civilization and most likely will continue to do.

However, it is this issue that makes me be Protestant. The liturgy of many Protestant churches are almost identical to the Catholic mass. That is because it is taken from Scripture.

Where I find fault is that this is the Table of the Lord. Jesus himself invites us to His Table. The church's role is to see that the service is ordered

If someone came in totally irreverent, cursing God, of course that person could be removed from the sanctuary of God.

However, this is the Lord's Table, not ours. We have no business judging people and whether they can or can not take Communion.

If God is who he says he is, he can handle someone who shouldn't be at the table all by himself.

It is Jesus, not the Church who gives the Invitation to the Lord's Table. All the minister needs to do is read what Jesus said.

This is a political stunt which should not happen in a church. According to Catholic doctrine, it was no one's business except the priest and Joe Biden.

I have no use for a Catholic priest who used the Sacrament of Holy Communion to score political points. Say what he wants during the week, but not during the Sacrament of Holy Communion and the entire worship service which is referred to by Catholics as the Mass.

I hope this priest's bishop will chastise him for using the Mass to further his political agenda.

Ok so what was the political motive behind the Father’s actions? The church is against abortion and Biden speaks in favor of it. You said it was between Father and biden. The Father expressed why he did it. So where is the political connection beside biden being a politician. If I’m understanding you correctly that is left outside the church, so inside it’s just those two. So are you saying the Father should have ignored everything biden (who is a public figure) has been saying which goes against the teachings of the church and been given a free pass for lack of a better term.

I find it refreshing that someone within the Church has taken a moral stand on this, and I hope many more do. Biden doesn’t go around announcing he’s catholic to the world. I didn’t even know he was catholic until I saw these multiple articles on and looked it up.

So what’s wrong with a religious leader checking a follower when he sees him straying from his faith for the purpose of some kind of gain?

Well, Christian theology is about forgiveness freely offered and lack of judgement. That is lacking when a priest, or the church as a whole does judgmental stunts like this. Christ walked the earth with whores and tax collectors - and was rebuked for it publicly, but still did it anyway. He said something about the judgement you make against someone will be held against you, so refrain from judgements, and that only those without sin can cast stones. Catholics believe that Mary, mother of Jesus and Jesus himself are the only people in history without sin, so the priest was on very shaky ground theologically.

The victims of the Crusades, Inquisitions, and a thousand years of sexual abuse paid for all of those great things the Church did for civilization. Organized religion has been the bane of the earth since man started walking upright. "A pox on their Houses."

It amazes me how everyone here thinks the priest is in the wrong. Why because he took a moral stand based on his faith and being a man of god. Everyone of you is sitting here trying to defend biden, why because he was the Vice President. All of you have completely forgotten that he’s still just a man. A man that has been all over the tv and radio advocating for abortion. That’s no secret. It’s also no secret that the Catholic Church is against abortion. So why is it so hard to believe that this man got checked by a religious leader of the same faith. News flash it’s not. I’m sure the priests of every church he has walked into wish they did something for what he’s been saying. This is the first one that actually had the morals to do it. So good for him.

This is a religious article but I posted it here in the politics section just to see the length you people would go to to spin it that biden has done no wrong.

And yes only God can judge us, so when he hits the gates to be judged, the good lord will give him an express ticket straight down for eternity.

How is publicly denying communion to a presidential candidate based on their stance on abortion not a politically motivated decision? The catholic church, and almost certainly this priest, gives communion to millions of people who are pro-choice every week. This was done publicly and for political reasons, it is obvious.

“Holy Communion signifies we are one with God, each other, and the Church. Our actions should reflect that. Any public figure who advocates for abortion places himself or herself outside of Church teaching.”

Why is this decision limited only to public figures? The priest is saying that any other member of the church who is pro-choice would have received communion. Biden doesn't get communion because he is politically, not personally, pro-choice and he is a public figure. One person is pro-choice and gets communion because they don't have political influence, and Biden is pro-choice and doesn't get communion because of his political influence. The priest is making a politically motivated decision.

The article also says that Biden doesn't personally support abortion but doesn't want to impose his view on others. So Biden isn't pro-choice in his personal beliefs, only in policy. The article shows that the priest made the decision to refuse communion only to a public figure because they would not impose the restriction of abortion onto others that don't share their belief.

Biden's view shows, at least in theory, a separation of church and state. If he were to choose to impose his belief and restrict access to abortions then that would be against a separation of church and state as it would be imposing a religious belief on all people, even those who do not follow that religion.

No one is "in favor" of abortion. People can be pro-choice, but nobody just wants abortions. Everyone knows this, to say anything different is being dishonest, but I'm not sure what to expect from someone who is now trying to preach on LPSG. I feel like this priest might have a problem with people being members of this website...

First, you are right to post this is politics - it is about the priests faith and his politics. And second, in your last sentence you undermine the priests actions by saying judges he is replacing his judgement for God's - something God was clear he should not do. I remain impressed how you pose an argument then blow it up.

Yes....but.....the other half of Jesus' reclining at table with tax collectors and prostitutes is that he told them to leave their pasts behind and follow him.

It wasn't "It's all good. Just go ahead and keeping being tax collectors and prostitutes." It was, "I love you, but you gotta meet me on this."

I don't think the priest erred in denying Biden communion. If Joe is publicly standing against a doctrine of the Church, it's sort of hard to look past it. I can see it as being up to Joe. In a sense, he has separated himself. Maybe he's willing to take that position.

Further, one could argue that Biden made it a political statement by putting the priest in that position. If Joe--and believe me, I'll vote for him if he wins the primary--truly wanted to receive Holy Communion, he could've done so in private.

Exactly! Well said. I know many Catholics who are using birth control - a sin on par with abortion in the eyes of the church. One of them has a school named after his uncle, who was a Bishop then a Cardinal. Most Catholics are a la carte - they pick and choose which parts of the dogma they accept and go on their merry way. In fairness most other Christians do to, none of whom are judged and rebuked for their actions or beliefs. Here we have a priest denying sacraments to a believer, who for all he knows repented in his heart for his perceived 'sins.'

I guess we disagree - my point is the priest only did this for his own self aggrandization. He does not hold others to the same standard and he made assumptions about what Biden may at any given moment have reconciled with God. We render taxes to governments per Jesus specific instruction. Tax collectors the time were given an amount they were to pay the government no matter what, their legal job was to squeeze citizens for as much as they could to pay that amount and then they lived on the overage collected. THAT is what made them unpopular, no one liked to pay, but I never saw Christ say tax collectors should not collect or taxes should not be paid.

Render unto Caesar.
And yes, you're right that Biden could've made a a change. He'd have to have been sincere about ending his pro-choice position, however.
ETA: Or not. I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure he can't be actively pro-choice.

Who gives a fuck what one catholic priest thought? It's the 21st century, not the 11th century.

The priest has a boss, basically his bishop. Now this matter has become public it is possible for the bishop to step in and permit communion, perhaps administer it himself. Given the seriousness within the RC church of denying communion this really is a paramount issue.

If the bishop doesn't do this then I think we have to see the policy as one sanctioned by bishop and ultimately by the pope, so one which is Roman Catholic church teaching.

What a single priest thinks probably doesn't matter. What the RC church thinks does matter. In S and C America there is enormous poverty caused by over-population, which is a direct consequence of the RC church's opposition to all contraception. Part of this is their opposition to the pill.
