When the roads get icy here in Alaska, most of the vehicles that lose it and go into the snow are pickups, they can get going but are not in good control (probably driven by 20 something guys). Very seldom see a subaru that has run off the road. I have a pickup for hauling and plowing snow, it doesn't leave the driveway unless it is actually needed.

I notice the same thing. It's usually pickups and large SUV's that end up off the road. Most do seem to be driven by young inexperienced drivers.
Subaru's are usually driven by more mature drivers. Four wheel drives can go when it's slick but still require careful driving to maintain control.
People seem to think that if they drive a big 4x4 that the laws of physics no longer apply.

Here in the land of snow and mud and hunting and fishing and farming and construction, trucks are a tool. Call me a hillbilly, but I have had to use mine to pull more than a few "sissified city boys" and their rice rockets out of the ditch.

Its funny how a thread comes up about "height vs penis size" or "shoe size vs penis size" everyone is quick to dismiss it, but when the truck threads come up, all the tiny car drivers come out to claim it as truth. Sounds to me like the ones with the little cars are the insecure ones....

Same here. I live out in the boonies and there is much hunting, farming, and construction business here. A truck is a neccesity for these groups of people. We can some really nasty weather here too. I have a truck to get through the bad weather and go up in the mountains or haul something.
It's just a normal Toyota 4x4 pickup. No big tires or lift kit. I have no need of an SUV so I have never owned one. People talk about electric cars or hybids. They are fine for urban areas but pretty useless in the country.
I wouldn't pay the extra for one while living in this area. Same with public transportation...there is none here. I can't take a bus or train anywhere no matter how much I would like to. Here you either own a car or you stay home and not work.

A lot of the talk of guys who own trucks or SUV's compensating for lack of other things is coming from the environmental crowd. I never heard nearly as much of this stuff when I was growing up. When I was in high shool nearly everbody in this area owned a pickup. It's just in the last years that I have heard so much rage against large vehicles. There was even a comic in the big city news paper last fall about it. This guy was laughed at due to his size in school, at the doctor, and by his girlfriend. He get's mad goes out and buys the biggest Hummer made. The last line said "now eveybody will know". Shows him driving through an urban area with everybody on the sidewalks and in other cars snickering. It was just a political crack at large vehicles by some cartoonist who also happens to be a tree hugger.
