Some cultures tend to influence society to be more superficial and vain than other cultures. The media and advertisements have influence on younger generation more than the older generation about the "ideal look" and appearance. There have been many formal and informal studies that superficial appearance such as skin color, height, weight, age, attractiveness plays a role in getting hired and career advancement in the American culture. Height has become an important advantage in career advancement in the Korean and Chinese culture. Fashion, youth, beauty and materialism are emphasized to the younger Western culture's generation than other previous generations and its sphere of influences are reaching to other cultures.
In addition, pornography is widely available in many societies. People who are constantly expose to adult media including websites, many become specifically turn-on to certain race, body built, endowment (breast and/or penis) and have other sexual preferences. Human’s body parts have become objectified. Penis and breast size have become an important sexual desirability on many who are influenced by porn and adult websites. "Meat Markets" are increasingly become widely available in a form of strip bars, clubs, personal ads, and places that cater to sex.
How much impact do you think society or culture have on you in term on your sexual preference and attraction? Is it superficial and/or vain if you need to be attractive (or sexually desire) to others by maintaining your appearance and look? Do you feel it is superficial to be sexual turn-on to certain types of people because of your preferences? It seems that in many gay communities’ this is greatly affected by these influences.
