From my conversations with my friends who are also black men, it seems that the majority of black guys are circumcised, out of the hundreds I've known only two have not been cut. is there any collective psycho-sexual trauma from history in america (I.e. the history of lynchings where there was high frequency of castrations) in the south that provokes the prevalence of circumcision in black families.

For the Black guys, 1) whats your status c/u? 2) do you agree with the practice? 3) whats your thoughts as to an origin and reasoning for its frequency?

Also shameless plug, this idea is why i started my tumblr Redefining Black Masculinity if you care to submit you photos to Redefining Black Masculinity - Submit

In the south, most Black men were not cut. I think that even now a large percentage are intact. In the north, until recently, public hospitals would circumcise without asking, so lower income African American boys got cut. Now, I think that all is changing. I can't comment on the historical reverberation idea, but certainly routinely circumcising Black male infants is barbaric, and denies Black boys and men the pleasure that they are due.

First I'll just say I'm not American, but from Zimbabwe/South Africa (moved around alot).

I'm black and uncircumcised, same as my 3 brothers and father. Most of the boys in boarding school were uncircumcised. We actually made fun of the guys in the shower who were circumcised (mean I know, but it was high school). Just my 2 cents.

I think the high rate of circumcision among African-Americans started in 1965 when Medicaid started to pay for non-therapeutic infant circumcision.

I don't think it should be done honestly because there's not any scientific evidence that can be found to correlate a larger infection rate for uncircumcised men. I'm uncut myself (feel free to see my pics) and I'm so thankful my mom didn't have me snipped.

I'm sure from a sociological perspective there is trauma that has been done and it
could be seen as a perpetuation of some kind of oppression but that's open for debate.

As far as the frequency of it in our African-american culture, I would say it probably stems from the strong biblical connection to the many black communities in the United States. Just as something that was done by other Christians in regards to Onan and the spilling of his seed as well as other Old Testament practices that are utilized by the Jews to differentiate from the Gentiles.

My guess is it has to do with the number of people from the US posting on this thread. The "hyphen American" thing seems to be de rigeur there - African American, Native American, Asian American, etc. You also hear them say things like "gays," which is pretty uncommon anywhere else. Every nation seems to have its own idiosyncratic ways of labelling people who are different in some way from the dominant social group.

Well most guys get snipped when their babies and don't have any say in the matter. I have seen allot of both however in the Midwest here there mostly cut. I have seen allot of black and white guys both that are uncut however cut is likely something like 75%

Cut at birth, wish I wasn't. Most likely for this reason and I think it's the reason in most cases.

1. I am cut.

2. I don't agree with the practice of circumcision.

3. I think that circumcision practices were done out of religious purposes. Circumcision helps parents clean their baby son's penis easier.

A large percentage of Americans (black, white, purple or orange) are cut.

I'm circumsized, my father is not, and told my mom to have it done to me, as it makes life easier.

I've never had extra foreskin to miss it.

I can see the practical application of circumcision, to make things easier when cleaning, or the STD stats, but I can see why one would want to keep their skin
