My introduction to music was via bakelite radio

.....and the HIFi stereo....My Mum loved Nat...my Dad loved Winifred, Johnny Cash and HerB Alpert.

The seventies were a glorious mix of everything.......never to be seen again....rock and roll, met disco met soul, met r&b, met heavy rock, met heavy metal. met the 2000...and it all became political.

Not only did he "discover" it, he made a name for himself in the music industry singing in Afrikaans. :)

Luv ya to death, Fuzzy, and I appreciate the spirit in which you present this topic.

Actually, there are a FEW of us (wink wink, nod nod) who'd "discovered" "white" music long ago. Though admittedly, my own experience (as an ex-Army brat) was no doubt atypical of most black people.

And yes, political music existed before the seventies and "the answer is" (still) "blowing in the wind."

As such, many (if not most) black folk were products of a somewhat isolated, marginalized (and often demonized) community from which solace via entertainment and music was sought from more familiar sources - with which one could identify. Music that served as the sound track to an entire social setting.

And in turn there developed within the community that which was designated as acceptably "black" and that which was NOT.

So perhaps the examples you've entertained us with above are mere indicators of other current trends, in which young black people are now exploring various and differing avenues in sports, entertainment, business, technology, and other areas once previously defined as "not black."

And cross-cultural growth in experiences, opportunities, skills, and manners of EXPRESSION, can't be anything BUT good.

Thanks for the posts. ;)
