Personally, I want the original aspect ratio. But on plasma sets, as well as old fashioned cathode-ray tubes, prolonged letterboxing, either vertical or horizontal, over rtime can lead to uneaven burn-in, ultimately leaving the blackened out areas of the screen producing brighter parts of the image in those portions where the blackened bars used to be.

Movies shot in cinema widescreen have a 21:9 aspect ratio, not 16:9. The movies that make use of all 1920x1080 pixels of an HD set are 16:9.
The 21:9 movies have large black bars on the top and bottom.
The 16:9 movies have very little, if any at all, black bars.
When you trim 21:9 movies to fill up a 16:9 screen you're cutting out a LOT of the actual picture.
