When I was up north last, I saw massive amounts of racism. Real prejudice and hatred from white folks towards the large Asian populations that have established up there, Staffordshire, Birmingham way.

When I asked about it, I was told that the Asian populations are actively separatist and had no intentions of ever integrating into British life or community.

They told me how this had given birth to a northern phenomenon called white flight.

I'm not naive to believe everyone I know up north is a neo Nazi, so I was left with the conclusion that there is no smoke without fire.

I think there is some truth in what you were told RP. I live in Peterborough and there are definite Asian, Polish etc areas. And it doesn't surprise me, people will generally gravitate towards their own people. Much like the British ex pats do it Spain, for example.

But which comes first, the separation or the prejudice and hatred?

Unfortunately yes, they recently won 2 seats in the European parliament... they have most of their support in Yorkshire (much to the shame of most of the Yorkshire folk I know).

They are gaining popularity on the back of the recession and general apathy!

That saddens me.

So in essence immigrants and offspring of immigrants are being targetted as scapegoats for the state of Britain both socially and politically. Very misguided.

Not sure about the white flight bit, but i am up north and was attacked driving through a town with my elderly grandmother by four asian guys with baseball bats who smashed my car and assaulted me and told me to get off their land and take that old white bitch with you. The police took statements and would not pursue as they said they did not want to cause a racist war, but were apologetic about it.

Exactly... the recession has been a gift to the BNP, they have something they can use that is affecting the entire country... and they can blame it on the migrants.

You know, on their website they talk about offering financial incentives to non whites to go "home", even the second and third generations for whom this is the only home they've ever known.

As an Englishman, I have encountered both xenophobia and racism.

I have had people take a shot at me for being English, over what seems to boil down to incidents that span British history, as if I'm the living embodiment and soul representative of the shit the nations ancestry got up to years, if not millennia ago.

Worst for me though was in England itself, by the English.

One of the reasons I left the UK was because of the way I felt I was treated by my own government, and I do feel a degree of resentment over it.

And that is a problem. When will they realise that ignoring ANY racially motivated attack will add fuel to the flames.

It's pretty much the same here in Tenerife as you say Denise. You'd be hard pressed to find many native Spanish speakers in the town where I live. They are nearly all Brits. We moved here out of comfort not long after we arrived on the Island. Familiarity and all that. So having the shoe on the other foot I can understand how that happens.

There's a difference in attitude here though towards foreigners. They have their way of doing hings and you have to comply. You need to see a Doctor or do anything official then speak Spanish or pay for an interpreter. End of.

This was something I heard a lot of when I asked a question of two.

It seems this is exactly the nature of many peoples complaints is not the source of their racisms.

I was told how a group of Jehovah's witnesses where beat up for knocking on doors in an exclusively Asian part of town. The police said they wouldn't peruse it as it would cause a race/religion war.

...and people wonder how the BNP and their like gain strength?

I think the UK has some serious race issues it's frankly too PC and frightened to even broach.

I was also told the the new witch label was racist, so people don't speak out for fear of being burnt at the stake.

I didn't leave because of 'Asians' or immigrants. I'm an immigrant now myself, so that would have been ironic, lol.

I left because I was actively told that when it came to housing and other issues, I was simply not what they would consider a 'priority'... in fact at one point was told with the strongest of implication that I should live with my parents, get married so I had a dual income or think about housing 20 years down the line!

...it would seem the longer I remained, young, single, male, healthy, middle class, employed, educated and yes, apparently English, it would be a case of fuck my luck.

It does make you resent the system in general.

And my goal is to stay and fight.

I'm passionate about being British, and will do my bit to keep Britain great.

Cheesey, but true!

All the best to you on that front, I fear you have a great task ahead of you, all be it up hill and against an ill wind.
