If you've got it flaunt it...

I think most men don't have very impressive legs (or big bulges) so they will tend to hide behind the board type swimuits. Myself, I have massive quads and a decent bulge and enjoy wearing tight (lycra) trunks that are longer than square top trunks but not as long as biker shorts. I feel they really show the sweep in my quads, allow you to see the definition in my legs, and the new suit I have has a nice contoured pouch for my package.

For my next vacation I know I will be getting a lot of stares.

If I have to wear anything at the pool or beach, I'll go for a speedo. I don't like the way boardies feel and they're way too restricting. Board shorts are fine if you're fat, don't move around much or don't have quads, but that's not for me. At an absolute push, I'd wear running shorts, but you'll never catch me in boardies. (Well, you probably would because I wouldn't be able to run properly without hitching them up!)
