A British MP has introduced a bill that will outlaw counsellors who offer 'treatment' to gay people to turn them straight. the bill will also regulate the counselling industry for the first time.

in a surprise move sources in whitehall have indicated government support for the bill, unusual for a private member's bill, which are dependent on government support to have any chance of becoming law.

the MP putting the bill forward says the 'treatments' offered are harmful and could now be outlawed altogether.

unsurprisingly, Christian groups have vowed to fight the legislation with vigour. they say such therapies ought to be offered to people who are uncomfortable with gay feelings.

personally i think if christians stopped demonising gay people then everyone would be comfortable with their feelings. however, expect to see the fundamentalists make a fool of themselves again. And lose again.

I think you will find i was referring to the fundamentalist ones. Some of my best friends are Christians

Hmmm. You could have worded it more carefully then.

unsurprisingly, Christian groups have vowed to fight the legislation with vigour.

personally i think if christians stopped demonising gay people...

The two above are phrased as generalities, a kind that these days is quite commonly intentional and malicious.

Your generalizations of the Christian community are incredibly immature.

I was also raised and associate myself as being Christian by belief system.

The problem as I see it is that the good mainstream Christians, and there are many, refuse to publicly denounce and distance themselves from the extremists including Ministries such as Westboro Baptist/Phelps, and a number of others who the United States Government now considers to be fronts for "hate groups".

Pope Francis in moves that are making history at the Vatican is beginning to soften and change his approach and that of the Catholic World, Catholicism and all towards many issues not just homosexuality.

Very recently the earth moved when the beginning of positive movement again in many directions was seen within the Mormon Church.

Currently, there are many Christian denominations who have made many positive moves and it is hoped that these are going to continue.

Sadly, the term "Born Again Christian" has come to be seen as a marker for a Christian Extremist. This is because the "good guys" again refuse to distance themselves from the bad guys.

Televangelists have been particularly good at creating hate and sometimes actual crimes.

Pat Robertson, probably now a billionaire was well known to use anti-gay divisive issues to increase donations.

I want to remind:

Pat Robertson has always been one of the most clever. He himself never says anything but leads really stupid mouthpieces into doing it for him.

One of his best was always the late Jerry Falwell. Jerry was an expert at opening his mouth and making stupid proclamations that sounded great, raised money, and created problems.

Jerry Falwell opened his mouth and pronounced a character on a show called "Teletubbies" for pre-speech capable children as being a tool for homosexuals to indoctrinate babies into homosexuality. The character known as "Tinkie Winkie" was purple and Mr. Falwell went on to elaborate that purple was a "gay" color. This was news to me in that I was not aware that a color had the capability of having sexual orientation. He then told the story that the ariel on "Tinkie Winkie's" head was an inverted triangle and that was a secret symbol among homosexuals. That is true, but he did not conveniently finish that story. What he left out was that an inverted pink triangle was tattooed on people who were or suspected of being gay by Adolph Hitler just before he slaughtered them. That is how people who were or were suspected of being gay were identified.

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart gets caught on Indio Blvd which is the tenderloin area in an area East of the Sun and Sand of Palm Springs, California in a white Jaguar by a vice-cop soliciting an act of prostitution on tape with a car full of porn. He then gives the best performance ever easily out distancing Meryl Streep in acting ability simply because he helped the other big boys take down Jim Bakker and his Ministry. In the typical no honor among thieves when Swaggart saw the same coming for him he refused to step down and unlike Bakker who was honest about his mistakes Swaggart told them to go jump in a lake. By the way that performance may still be on You Tube, it is priceless.

Arnold Murray a "Preacher" from Gravette, Arkansas read a letter from a 7-year-old girl very distraught because her puppy had died. She was concerned that her puppy was not going to have an afterlife or whatever. Murray responded to a 7-year-old telling her that her puppy was going to Hell because only humans can go to heaven. Not only that he went on to elaborate on it. What a Prince of a guy.

A Televangelist in Colorado Springs went on to insist that Halloween was a "Satanic Holiday" and he made up a story for an origination of that holiday that had zero basis in fact, and told his entire audience that they could send for a copy of his fliers, and, that they should place these fire and brimstone fliers, in treat bags instead of treats.

While I 100% support the idea that generalizations made against "Christianity" or "Christians" as a whole are not good and need some re-thinking I also support the idea that generalizations made by many in the more extreme elements within the Christian Community are equally bad and it is these generalizations that have over time soured many.

When the good Christian people distance themselves as said yet again from the not so good ones what may just take place is tolerance, unity and understanding and that is to a great degree what Jesus stood for.

That is another lazy, inaccurate, and borderline offensive generalization.

Offensive to whom? Extremists and hate groups?

To "the good mainstream Christians" who indeed do "publicly denounce and distance themselves from the extremists including Ministries such as Westboro Baptist/Phelps, and a number of others who the United States Government now considers to be fronts for hate groups", those who value such loving Christianity, those who sympathize with it, and those who sympathize with the "good mainstream Christian" community.

I think it's safe to say that some "mainstream Christians" do come forward this way, some don't.

I suspect neither you nor FuzzyKen meant to lump all these people into one group.
