Thank you voyeuristic for bringing some much-needed sense and sensitivity to this thread. Not only is phalloplasty expensive (usually not covered by health insurance) and fairly unconvincing by most standards, but it is also much riskier to perform than vaginoplasty (MTF sex reassignment surgery). We should also probably consider the idea that some transsexuals have a nostalgic, emotional connection to their genitalia, even if they feel it's wrong for them. Would you pay someone to, let's say, remove your nipples just because you thought they didn't suit you? Could you remove something you've lived with for decades because it didn't fit into a socially-defined "masculinity" or "femininity"?
I was frankly appalled at the level of vitriol thrown at Buck here. It took about 3 pages before someone called attention to the fact that Buck is still human, and deserves a basic amount of respect. Seriously, you can not be sexually attracted to transsexuals and still respect them. The references to throwing up at the sight of him, the confusion in pronoun description, calling him "not a real man", etc. are the same type of thing I've seen in other discrimination cases, usually involving homophobia. There's a fear there, a rejection of personhood, and probably a visceral reaction to the idea of castration (which I can mostly forgive because it's immediate). It's sickening that these posts went on for as long as they did. Especially for a "progressive" website.
I'm not attracted to Buck Angel, but what I can appreciate is his courage in living within his own self-identity, within boundaries that were defined by himself and not within those of a bi-sexual world view. It's hard enough to wrangle with an "abnormal" sexuality, much less have the perception that you've been born with the wrong body and wrong genetalia. Buck at least appears to even take pride in his being. So cut him and other transsexuals a little slack. A simple "no" and an explanation why would suffice. Fuck I can't believe I have to tell adults this shit...
