Budget Puzzle: You Fix the Budget

Today, you’re in charge of the nation’s finances. Some of your options have more short-term savings and some have more long-term savings. When you have closed the budget gaps for both 2015 and 2030, you are done. Make your own plan, then share it online

I'd love to be in charge of the UK budget, I would slash through government waste and pork barrel politics like a man possessed. The first thing to go would be our £7bn foreign "aid" programme, followed by the £400 winter fuel allowance paid to all pensioners, no matter how rich they are. The benefits system would be massively simplified and taxes on production would slowly be phased out and replaced with a land value tax, this measure alone would solve the housing market and our associated banking problems.

The BBC would be privatised too, I'm fed up paying for lefty state propaganda. Either that or we balance things up a bit and force everyone to have Fox news piped into their homes.

I'd tell the EU to stick their £450m budget increase up their arses too, and if they don't like it I'll see 'em in court!

One thing that seems to be constant with the examples posted is a major cut in Defense spending. Also, the Carbon & Bank Tax.

80 percent cut in expenses and 20 percent from tax increases. We're still a capitalistic nation as far as I'm concerned.

As a complete hypothetical, I tried to go through the system while trying to keep the percentage of savings from tax increases as low as possible. Managed to get it down to 8% on tax increases and 92% on spending cuts. Personally, I thought this was a lot harder to balance off both years than the first time I did it. What's also interesting is that while trying to do this I noticed that meeting the budget for 2030 was much faster than meeting it for 2015.

We need a conservative to take this test and come up with a scenario. Would be interesting to see what kind of numbers they come up with.

You posted while I was posting. Bread & butter! :biggrin1:
Without repeating what I just stated earlier, I think a combination of two different scenarios could be best for our country. Basing changes more on tax increases results in a faster, short term recovery for 2015 statistics, while basing changes on spending cuts illustrate a better long term recovery for 2030 projections. I wish there was a way we could monitor what would happen if we started with the higher tax scenario till 2015, then slowly adjust numbers to be more like the spending cut scenario by 2020.

I think mine posted previously is a good middle of the road plan... It's 60% from spending cuts and 40% from tax adjustments.

Even though we have different opinions on how to get there... we all balanced the budget! :-D
