this is veeeeeery specific, almost like a fetish for a type that is associated with a brand that defines who the person is- like a guy who wears Cathcart, or John Deere labels. Displaying a label describes a lifestyle beyond utiliarianism.
With respect to underwear, Calvin Klein started out as a brand that brought a whole layer of sexy with it, followed a few years later by Tommy Hilfiger and 2xist. if you wore one of those brands, you were telling people that you were more fashion aware than Hanes or FTL would allow, and 'sagging' started making it part of the look to put this name on display to others- whether in the gym or walking on the street.
Today it is Andrew Christian- its a call-out that tells others that, at the very least, you are comfortable wearing clothes made by a designer that overtly markets to the gay community. Marky Mark helped to cross CKs (and boxer briefs) from the gay community to become mainstream fashion. (For years the gay community has created lots of trends that become popularized and lost to the general public!) I wonder if it will ever cross over to be trendy to hetero men- 80s fashion saw men wearing bikini briefs in locker rooms and bedrooms across the country, but the LGBTQ movement has really changed the way that our culture identifies style, so who knows.
I think Speedos (and, Budgy Smugglers) would have a shot to become popular as swimwear trends shorter and tighter (again!) But the brand needs some publicity- either in a movie, or maybe from an Olympic swimmer/diver making them popular. Maybe in Tokyo next summer?
It seems like most of their styles feature the company name boldly printed across the seat- which, bad or good, would draw a lot of attention to folks reading the fine print... so the wearer might want to start working on his squats
But having another big company out there normalizing and popularizing the brief suit is awesome!
