Witnesses: US helicopters attack Syrian village

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syria's state-run television and witnesses say U.S. military helicopters have attacked an area along the country's border with Iraq, causing casualties.

The report quoted unnamed Syrian officials and said the area is near the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal. It gave no other details on Sunday's attack.

Local residents told The Associated Press by telephone that two helicopters carrying U.S. soldiers raided the village of Hwijeh, 10 miles inside Syria's border, killing seven people and wounding five. The U.S. military in Baghdad had no immediate comment.

I suppose all or most of the fatalities were "civilian".

    fortunately, no American casualties

The various local media reports said that some eight American commandos on board the helicopters carried out the operation and added that the helicopters left Syrian airspace with all the commandos on board, soon after the attack.

Is this the beginning of Bush's goodbye gift to John McCain?

No, but it is more evidence that the current GOP is willing to do whatever it takes to drive our reputation & economy down the toilet before someone else takes over. Very not smart. Starting attacks in yet ANOTHER country amidst everything that's going on right now.

Thank goodness we are pushing forward with our assault on terrorists and murderers, despite political pressure from liberal dissenters.

The Bush Admin will continue fighting for our safety right up until the final minutes of the term.

That's one of the biggest mistakes conservatives like you make when it comes to war in general. To assume that if we're not on page with your thoughts when it comes to fighting that we have to be dissenters. Do try to get that out of your head if you can. You guys are not 100% correct on issues regarding the war, and to act like you are is beyond ignorant.

To be honest, I had a sense that some of the problems we're experiencing with terrorists can be dealt with by dealing with Syria. But now? Considering our economic troubles, and how badly our troops are stretched beyond their means? Like the war in Iraq, I fear this will also prove to be another maneuver with a bad plan of attack. Instead of just rushing into countries with firearms and "fuckin' shit up", there should have been a MUCH better strategic plan for this.

You and the OP are such numbskulls.

    Your safety my ass....

There is no real threat from terrorism- Bush is doing EXACTLY what the Bin Laden family WANTS him to do to foment ever greater hatred for the US in the Arab world.

He's NOT getting Bin Laden, He's NOT destroying Al Queda... all he's doing is swelling the ranks of terrorist organizations, increasing the donations and money being funneled to terrorism...

And he's doing it so that more of his friends can suck MORE money out of YOUR pocket.

Killing innocents is not gonna end terrorism.

And, hey guys , read the latest issue of Scientific American- there is an article detailing how the Bush Homeland defense initiative has actually INCREASED the likelihood of a bioterrorism attack by a hundred-fold.

What really makes me sick is you guy's cavalier attitude toward the US killing a bunch of folks who have nothing to do with us.
Babies blown to pieces are just "collateral damage" to you, as long as they are not your babies.

Your self centered-ness knows no limits, your ethics, dismal.

Time to get someone who's smart enough to come up with a more effective strategy.
YOu don't win a war on terrorism by doing everything the enemy HOPES you will do...
You don't win a war on terrorism by bankrupting your own nation, just as Osama knew you would.

Osama Bin Laden has played the Republicans like an accordion...

Thanks, guys, for doing everything possible to ensure Bin Laden wins, traitors.

He took down the USSR by getting them to stay and fight for nothing...
He's winning this war cause guys like you are too unsophisticated to recognize the enemies' strategy.

BTW- terrorism is to manipulate the enemy thru fear.
How's it feel to be manipulated by your fear by your own party?

    ...fucking rube-pulican collaborators and profiteers...

the reportage of the incident that I have reviewed indicates the area of the incursion was a known corridor through which men and material were funneled into Iraq from Syria (with or without the Syrian regime's involvement) to support and maintain subversive and terrorist activity in Iraq

the American military response was rational

any blame for civilian casualties therefore reposes on Syria's acquiescence or failure to restrain

It is possible that the people killed in the attack were all terrorists or their supporters. I do not doubt that the US forces involved had good reason to believe that they were such. But you cannot justify making a military attack in a country with which the United States is not at war merely by observing that the people that we were trying to kill are those who have been trying to kill our soldiers. There remains the matter of violating another country's territorial sovereignty.

As for your last claim, it is ridiculous to make such a claim in advance of any knowledge of particulars. If we attacked a terrorist stronghold and incidentally killed some civilians, one may be able to make a case for what you say. If we committed another of our blunders and killed a bunch of civilians who had nothing to do with the insurgency in Iraq, then your claim is indefensible. In any case, you cannot say a priori that any civilian casualties are Syria's fault merely because our intention was to strike back against terrorists.

In any case, I don't have so much of a problem with someone saying that the military action was justified as I have with jingoistic idiots who think that an event like this is something to cheer about ("Go, George!"), for whom the people killed in the attacks are "pieces of shit" even when they may, for all we know, be innocent civilians, and who describe this action as "fighting for our safety" when it may, for all we know, have been a colossal blunder.

Better a numbskull then one like you void of anything within.

Phil’s tinfoil is shining especially bright today! Oh wait ……. never mind, Phil’s tinfoil hat is always shining brightly.

Duh …. Short of turning much of the world into glass eradicating terrorist groups must be done methodically and of course Phil has all the answers when those around the world who actually have a clue do not = right Phil you genius you lol!

Duh …. See the comment above regarding “Phil’s tinfoil hat is always shining brightly.”

Duh …. Phil just had a revelation! Good for you Phil!

And of course theories in a magazine are good for story telling but Phil doesn’t require proof of anything, stories that fit his agenda suffice even with zero evidence and then there are those many saying we are much safer but hey, they do not work as part of Phil’s ever-wacky smear campaign.

Phil like usual cannot comprehend the basics like how this does have something to do with us. Maybe it would help if Phil reads up on Bill Clintons bombing Iraq for four days, Somalia and Yugoslavia.

See the comment regarding “void of anything within” above.

Phil pretends the enemy allegedly controls this war and it is allegedly bankrupting this nation but of course Phil has zero to back this up with as simpleton conspiracy theories are always good enough for Phil.

Phil again pretending Phil knows something when for all Phil knows we have been using Osama right from the get-go but that doesn’t stop Phil from drumming up wacky new conspiracy theories.

Phil just showing the shininess of his pretty tinfoil hat again.

LOL! Phil says it was bin Laden that took down the USSR when any idiot with an elementary education knows that isn’t true or even remotely true but in Phil’s world it works which of course isn’t saying a whole lot for Phil.

Duh … I’m not suffering paranoid delusions but go ahead and enjoy yours.

Duh …. See the comment regarding “void of anything within” above.

Ever get the impression that 1bigg1 and starinvestor were those peculiar types, as children, who tortured cats, dogs, and any unfortunate small animal that did not escape their grasp? Some people grow up in the USA and seem to think that killing is the answer to everything.
