If its any comfort to you Starbucks chief financial officer was yesterday questioned by parliament about the companys odd accounts. In 15 years they only made a profit on paper one year, so the officer was asked exactly why they keep expanding a wholly unprofitable business. he didnt know.

It seem they pay a 'royalty' to a head office in the netherlands where tax rates are lowest, and buy all their coffee from Switzerland, which has a remarkably low tax rate on any transaction involving coffee, but despite the Uk business making no money, the Swiss branch makes 20% markup on selling coffee to Britain. Reckon they should demand a better deal from themselves before the Uk business goes bust?

If a company is making money it will keep on going. In the UK case, if we increased payroll taxes, this little scam over the coffee price wouldnt work. Starbucks would be forced to allow the Uk branch to have more of the profits. The Uk would gain because they arent going to close a business which is making money in reality, just not on paper.

No doubt disgruntled Romney voters.
My friend and I went to a local establishment the night of the election. They had on Fox News. Yes, we stayed, because we're not intolerant ideologues.
Anyway, once Ohio was called and the President was projected to win re-election, the owner, who had been upstairs watching with family and friends, storms down the stairs, turns on all the lights and yells out something like: that's it folks. We're closed...probably for good now. Everyone out!

True story.

It will calm down and soon the news will finally find something else to talk about.

In other words do as we say or suffer the consequences. Why not just remove all doubt about who runs the US and require workers to hand over their votes as a requirement for employment? Their little minds can't be counted on to do the right thing. We may need to amend the Constituion but that's a small thing once we have a more business friendly Congress in place. And ohh if this resembles the old Soviet Union then so be it there was some good things in that society not to be ignored.

I think an important point could be made for the losers of this election. With all the threats of cessation from the Union, and how many before the election were saying that if Obama got re-elected, they'd move out of the country. We on the Left had to put up with Bush, for two terms, and we toughed it out. The Right can do exactly the same thing, without grousing.

That you posited this story by saying you refrained from leaving over a TV station is beyond sad.

The owner most certainly overreacted...seems a major case of sour grapes. Howevvvvuh, whether businesses close shop or fire massive amounts of people, expect to see plenty of businesses scaling back employee hours to avoid paying for their health care. Could be wrong, but I believe a "part-time" employee is not eligible for health care. So what we've got is employers beating the system to avoid providing health care. Further, we've got employers willing to incur a penalty (smart from a bottom line perspective) so they do not have to pay for their employees health care.

Now, this might not result in massive shutdowns, but it will certainly not move this country "forward."

Raising costs on a pizza that is already nasty. That is a dilemma.

John Schnatter already lives in a castle mansion with a golf course and a swan lake.

Yeah, fuck the guy for working his whole life to earn that. Did you hear about his Camaro story?

Knock yourselves out with the boycott. You know how well that went with Chik-Fil-A.

Gee, couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of folks.

I'd rather patronize the local family owned pizza parlor than Papa John's. Besides getting better tasting pizza I'd be helping a small business to succeed. I'd also know that the money they make is going to help local families support themselves and not going to buy a second yacht or sixth home for some spoiled crybaby:cool:.

I love the idea that a Mom&Pop shop is naturally going to provide a higher quality product. If it tastes better, you SHOULD support that business, as (one would assume) you're paying for the best possible product. Anything else is just self-righteousness.

Let us not forget our God-given freedom to let our self-righteousness dictate our spending habits.

It's the American way.

Thanks hm, keep posting crap like this so I know who to boycott.

And nobody should fault you for boycotting any business, for whatever reason you have. It's your money, and you are entitled to spend it as you see fit. Though, realistically speaking, I would implore you (or any Liberal) NOT to turn this into another moral crusade, considering how protesting Chik-Fil-A almost immediately brought about its most successful day in a decade.

Well as long as we can admit Americans are, for the most part, completely brainless. You (any of us) should seek the best quality product for the best price...any other reasoning is wrong.

I'm not willing to concede that a boycott for political or ideological reasons is necessarily "wrong" (whatever that means)--though I certainly don't see such a strategy as warranted or effective in all cases.
